HOWLAND -- The Barbershoppers, a barbershop quartet, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.
SCOPE turkey dinner
CORTLAND -- Lake Vista SCOPE will hold a holiday turkey dinner at the 303. N. Mecca St. chapter Dec. 12. The Lakeview Madrigal Singers will perform at 10 a.m., followed by dinner at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required by Dec. 9. To reserve a place, mail a check for $7 to Carol Lang, SCOPE Inc., 220 W. AIDS Task Force dinner
WARREN -- The Trumbull County AIDS Task Force will host its annual World AIDS Day dinner Monday at the Hippodrome on High Street.
The evening will begin with a BYOB social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program. Louis Farmer, of the Cleveland Area AIDS Task Force, will discuss the work of his organization.
The all-volunteer Trumbull County AIDS Task Force relies on donations to provide services to people with AIDS and to educate about the disease.
Tickets for the event may be purchased in advance for $20 by calling (330) 307-4800 or at the door for $25.
Walk for charity
AUSTINTOWN -- John Fritz walked 73 miles from Austintown to Cleveland in October to raise money for spina bifida. Monday he was honored for his efforts by Austintown trustees. Trustees gave a proclamation in his honor. Fritz said he has raised about $6,500, with donations still coming in.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two armed robbers wearing nylon stockings over their faces ran into Eddie's Foods on Logan Avenue just before 9 p.m. Monday. One, holding a gun, jumped on the counter and ordered a clerk to hand over money. The second, carrying two large butcher knives, told a second employee to lay on the floor. The robbers took cash from the lottery drawer, cash from the register and a money bag from a shelf, reports show.
Forgery charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Forty counts of forgery filed against Isaac Green, 48, of Hammaker Street were bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury Monday from municipal court. Green was arrested earlier this month as a passenger in a stolen car that had 40 counterfeit $20 bills in it, police said. Secret Service Special Agent James Brundage was in court Monday to follow the case. Brundage said Green will likely be prosecuted federally. Brundage has said the fake money was likely made with an ink-jet printer. The counterfeit bills are copies of the new multishaded $20.
Bond set for suspect
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bond was set Monday in municipal court at $400,000 for Wayne A. Castle Jr., 22, of West Wood Street, who is charged with two counts of rape. Castle is accused of raping two Williamson Avenue girls, ages 4 and 7, over the weekend at his apartment. He confessed to police in a nine-page statement. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly will appoint a lawyer for Castle, who cannot afford to hire one. Castle will be back in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.
Kitchen fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A kitchen fire at 230 S. Dunlap Ave. at 4:13 a.m. Monday started from cooking grease, the fire department said. The occupant said he started to cook on the stove then fell asleep, reports show. The occupant and his neighbor extinguished most of the fire with a garden hose. Damage was confined to the kitchen and set at $15,000.
Man arrested
AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man was arrested by township police recently after they discovered he was wanted for failing to pay more than $45,000 in child support. Timothy L. Overton, 41, of Charlotte Street, is wanted in Lexington, Ky., for failing to make $70-per-week payments totaling $46,200.
Police had pulled over the 1990 Chevrolet Blazer he drove around 3:45 a.m. Friday, after discovering that the state had ordered confiscation of the license plates. When they reviewed Overton's background they found the Kentucky warrant.
