Scholarship establishedin honor of slain officer
YOUNGSTOWN -- The family and friends of Youngstown Patrolman Michael T. Hartzell have established a scholarship fund to memorialize the slain officer, who was killed in the line of duty April 29, 2003.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to six full-time students at Youngstown State University with at least a 2.5 grade point average. Special consideration will be given to graduates of Austintown Fitch High School, to students majoring in criminal justice and to students who are children of current Youngstown police officers.
Students who are children of officers serving in police or sheriff's departments in Mahoning, Columbiana or Trumbull counties and YSU students enrolled in the YSU Police Academy Program will also be given special consideration.
