Struthers' Mowrypaces Thiel
WOOSTER -- Thiel junior Adrienne Mowry, a Struthers High graduate, compiled career highs with 16 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Tomcats to a 57-51 victory over Manchester College in Sunday's consolation game of the Nan Nichols Classic.
Freshman forward Fontella Jones (Farrell) had nine points and nine rebounds.
Hiram tops Medaille
HIRAM -- Hiram College put three players in double figures as it topped Medaille 77-65 Sunday in a men's basketball game.
AJ White paced the Terriers (1-1) with 22 points. Dean Carlton added 16 and Allen Kirkpatrick finished with 12.
Nedaukke (0-2) was led by Rene Smith with 29 points.
Wooster drops Titans
WOOSTER -- The Westminster College women's basketball team fell behind 36-28 by intermission, then lost to Wooster 65-57 Sunday at Timken gymnasium.
Erica Talio took scoring honors for the Lady Titans (1-1) with 20 points. Carly Loehrka led Wooster (2-0) with 17 points.
Four Gateway teamsearn I-AA berths
Four Gateway Conference teams earned Division I-AA playoff bids in the 16-team field -- the first time a league has ever had four teams in the playoffs.
Northern Iowa (9-2), Southern Illinois (10-1), Western Illinois (8-3), and Western Kentucky (8-3) all received bids.

U.S. ralliesto win UBS
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- The United States kept the UBS Cup after Scott Hoch rallied from two holes down with five to play for a draw against Eduardo Romero.
That gave the Americans a half point and they tied the Rest of the World 12-12, allowing the U.S. team to retain the title.
The Americans have defeated the Rest of the World in all three meetings of the match-play event in which six members of each team are 50 years or older and six are 40 to 49.
Daly wins again
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- John Daly shot a 3-under-par 69 for a one-shot victory at the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational, his second straight win and first in the United States in nine years.
Daly finished at 9-under-par 279 for his first U.S. victory since the 1994 BellSouth Classic. He was coming off a win at the Korean Open last month, and his last PGA Tour victory came at the 1995 British Open.
Bjorn pulls awayfor Dunlop title
MIYAZAKI, Japan -- Denmark's Thomas Bjorn shot an even-par 71 to overtake third-round leader Sergio Garcia and win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament.
Donovan leads teamto MLS championship
CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan scored twice Sunday to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Fire in the MLS Cup -- Major League Soccer's championship match.
Donovan was selected as the game's MVP.
Rookie Ralph lauded
LOS ANGELES -- Damani Ralph of the Chicago Fire won Major League Soccer's Rookie of the Year award on Saturday. First-year Fire head coach Dave Sarachan won Coach of the Year. Chicago's Carlos Bocanegra was named Defender of the Year.
San Jose's Pat Onstad was named Goalkeeper of the Year.
French downs U.S.in Fed Cup finals
MOSCOW -- The United States lost the Fed Cup finals 4-1 Sunday, beaten convincingly by a French team that got a clinching victory from Amelie Mauresmo to win the title a second time.
Mauresmo routed Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2, 6-1 to put France ahead 3-0 in the best-of-five series.
The U.S. team, captained by Billie Jean King, salvaged a victory in doubles to avoid a sweep. Martina Navratilova, 47, extended her Fed Cup record to 39-0, teaming with Lisa Raymond to beat Emilie Loit and Stephanie Cohen-Aloro.
Finland's Palanderwins season-opener
PARK CITY, Utah -- Defending World Cup slalom champion Kalle Palander of Finland won the season-opening race Sunday, and American Bode Miller retained his overall lead despite being disqualified after falling on his first run.
Miller, coming off a victory in the giant slalom Saturday, fell at the end of the first run. He still leads the World Cup overall standings with wins in both GS events this season.
Moscow to stageindoor track race
BERLIN -- Moscow will stage track and field's indoor world championships in 2006 and Fukuoka, Japan, will host the cross-country worlds in the same year.
Moscow beat out Madrid, Spain, for the indoor worlds, which will take place in March.
Smith ties sacks record
MIAMI -- The Washington Redskins' Bruce Smith tied the NFL career sacks record Sunday night, increasing his total to 198 when he and Renaldo Wynn dropped Miami Dolphins quarterback Brian Griese for a 9-yard loss in the first quarter.
Smith was credited with a half-sack, tying him with Reggie White, who played for Philadelphia and Green Bay.
