YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Board of Elections confirmed the election of Robert Carcelli as Struthers council president today after a recount. Carcelli officially defeated incumbent Danny Thomas Jr. by a vote of 1,524 to 1,512. Carcelli, a former councilman-at-large, will take office Jan. 1. Also, the elections board today certified the results of the race for the fourth and final seat up for grabs during the recent election on the Youngstown school board. Kathryn Hawks Haney officially captured the seat with 3,471 votes. Joyce Lomax finished in fifth place with 3,352 votes.
Girls brawl in school
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifteen girls, ages 14, 15 and 16, threw punches at one another, grabbed one another's hair and wrestled to a hallway floor during a fight Monday at Wilson High School, police said. Police, with the assistance of faculty members, separated the girls. No reason for the fight was given. Each of the girls received a 10-day suspension and a court summons charging them with disorderly conduct.
School official resigns
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Board of Education accepted the resignation of George Donie as its director of business, effective Jan. 1, at its Monday meeting. Donie, a former school treasurer, has served as the district's director of business since 1991. He plans to retire.
Cleaner charged in theft
BOARDMAN -- A 40-year-old Austintown woman will be arraigned Monday in Mahoning County Court here on a misdemeanor count of theft. Police say Valerie Ann Oesch of Rockwell Road admitted to officers that she took $7,500 worth of jewelry from the home of a resident on the 1000 block of Aspen Lane. Oesch, who works as a cleaner at the Aspen Lane resident's home, returned the items after her arrest about 2:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
Woman faces charge
BOARDMAN -- Police charged a 20-year-old Youngstown woman with theft, saying she took a Salvation Army kettle and the money inside it from outside the Giant Eagle on Doral Drive. Angelique F. Moore of Market Street will be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Mahoning County Court here. Police said Moore, who was charged Monday, took the kettle and an undetermined amount of money inside it Nov. 13.
Walk for charity
AUSTINTOWN -- John Fritz walked 73 miles from Austintown to Cleveland in October to raise money for spina bifida. Monday he was honored for his efforts by Austintown trustees. Trustees gave a proclamation in his honor. Fritz said he has raised about $6,500, with donations still coming in.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two armed robbers wearing nylon stockings over their faces ran into Eddie's Foods on Logan Avenue just before 9 p.m. Monday. One, holding a gun, jumped on the counter and ordered a clerk to hand over money. The second, carrying two large butcher knives, told a second employee to lay on the floor. The robbers took cash and a money bag from a shelf, reports show.
Forgery charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Forty counts of forgery filed against Isaac Green, 48, of Hammaker Street were bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury Monday from municipal court. Green was arrested earlier this month as a passenger in a stolen car that had 40 counterfeit $20 bills in it, police said. Secret Service Special Agent James Brundage was in court Monday to follow the case. Brundage said Green will likely be prosecuted federally. The counterfeit bills are copies of the new multishaded $20.
Bond set for suspect
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bond was set Monday in municipal court at $400,000 for Wayne A. Castle Jr., 22, of West Wood Street, who is charged with two counts of rape. Castle is accused of raping two Williamson Avenue girls, ages 4 and 7, over the weekend at his apartment. Police said he confessed to them in a nine-page statement. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly will appoint a lawyer for Castle, who cannot afford to hire one.
