McDONALD -- The village's 22nd annual Christmas tree lighting will be at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in front of the municipal building, 451 Ohio Ave. The event will feature refreshments, caroling and a visit from Santa.
The Community Chest will collect money to help the needy during the holiday season.
Closed for the holiday
McDONALD -- Village offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Trash pickup will run one day late this week. The week of Dec. 1 will be the last for leaf pickup.
Niles tree festivities
NILES -- The Niles Lions Club will sponsor the city's Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 in front of the Niles Fire Department. Santa will make an appearance at the event, and refreshments and caroling will be provided.
Dairy Queen burglary
MERCER, Pa. -- State police said someone broke into the Dairy Queen on U.S. Route 19 in East Lackawannock Township and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.
The burglar entered the shop by prying open a window sometime between 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:40 a.m. Sunday.
Machines damaged
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Someone did about $5,000 damage to two vending machines at Sylvan Heights Golf Course.
Police said the machines were pried open sometime from 7 p.m. Saturday to 8:45 a.m. Sunday and an undisclosed amount of cash, candy and soda pop was taken.
The machines are owned by Den Vend of Sampson Street.
2 residences burglarized
SALEM -- Break-ins were reported at two residences, police said.
Someone broke into an apartment on the 600 block of Sixth Street and stole computer games. The crime was reported at 5:25 p.m. Friday.
An intruder entered a home on the 200 block of East Fourth Street while the resident was sleeping. Taken was a lockbox containing prescription medication. The crime was reported about 6:56 p.m. Sunday, police said.
House, car vandalized
SALEM -- Human urine and feces, along with eggs, were thrown on a house in the 1500 block of North Ellsworth Avenue, police said. A car parked in front of the home was dented. The crime occurred about 9 p.m. Friday, police said.
Driver seriously injured
MERCER, Pa. -- Gail McClelland of McClelland Road was listed in serious condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with injuries suffered in a car-pickup collision on U.S. Route 19 at Old Mercer Road in East Lackawannock Township.
Pennsylvania State Police said McClelland pulled from Old Mercer Road into the path of a pickup truck driven by Gerald McDowell of Hadley Road, Hadley, traveling north on Route 19 around 5:30 p.m. Friday. Police said the McClelland car continued accelerating after the impact, and a passenger, Daniel McClelland of the same address, was able to steer it to a stop off the road, through a fence and into a woodpile.
Daniel McClelland, McDowell and a passenger in his truck suffered minor injuries, police said.
Charged in robbery
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police charged a Crawford County man with the Oct. 4 robbery of the Rite Aid store at 275 Main St.
Alan Summerville of College Street, Meadville, was arrested Friday at the Crawford County Jail, where he is being held on other charges. He is charged with robbery, theft and possession of a controlled substance in the Rite Aid case. Police contend he entered the store, told the pharmacist that he had a gun and robbed the store of 80 pills of the painkiller OxyContin.
He was arraigned and returned to jail.
Motorcyclist in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- William Sherman of New Castle escaped serious injury when a Ford Bronco driven by Brenton Billig of Grove City ran over the motorcycle he was riding.
Pennsylvania State Police said both Sherman and Billig were westbound on Pa. Route 208 in Springfield Township around 3:45 p.m. Saturday when traffic ahead of them slowed for a turning vehicle. Sherman also slowed, but Billig's vehicle hit him from behind and ran over the motorcycle.
