Ramun wins
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Poland High School boxer Dan Ramun evened his amateur boxing record at 1-1, winning a unanimous four round decision over Ryan Acre (0-2) from the Akron Rubber City Boxing Club Friday night.
Ramun who is trained at the Buckeye Elks by John Hobart, gained his first amateur victory with power punching in the first two rounds.
He knocked Acre down for an eight count with a left hook in round one and did the same thing with a right cross in the second round, easily winning the last two rounds as he scored with a series of combinations.
Both boxers came in at 141 pounds for the super lightweight bout.
"Dan showed great improvement from that first bout and I expect him to progress even more," said Hobart.
The fight was one of nine bouts on an amateur boxing show which had three Jack Loew fighters from the Southside Boxing Club in action. Junior Olympian Juan Salinas won a three-round decision over Trey Sales from the Akron Rubber City Boxing Club in a battle of 85 pounders.
Two other Southside Boxing Club fighters, 145-pounder Lou Zamudio and 119-pound Charlie Fagan, were stopped in bouts.
Zamudio, who had a great start in his four-rounder, ran into the thunderous punching of Shawn Porter from the Akron Fighters Against Drugs Gym which had the referee stop the fight in the first round. Fagan (6-2) was in a four-rounder against Mike Snyder from the Akron Rubber City Boxing Club and in that bout the referee stopped the contest, awarding the fight to Snyder with only five seconds remaining in round three.
The three Southside Boxing Club fighters and Ramun will all be on the Wednesday night "Thanksgiving Feast" amateur card at Krakusy Hall sponsored by Jack Loew and the Southside Boxing Club.

Jeter will not need thumb operation
NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter's injured left thumb will not need an operation.
The New York Yankees' shortstop was examined Friday by team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon and hand specialist Dr. Mel Rosenwasser.
The doctors determined the ligament Jeter sprained against Boston in the opener of the AL championship series Oct. 8 had healed, Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Nov. 4 that Jeter ruptured a tendon against the Red Sox. The team captain played the rest of the postseason despite the injury.
U.S. men's team clinches berth
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- American Shane Hamman finished ninth in the super heavyweight class at the World Weightlifting Championships on Saturday, earning 17 much-needed points and helping the U.S. men's team secure a berth in next year's Athens Olympics.
Officials initially said the U.S. team failed to clinch a berth in the 2004 Athens Games, but after recalculating the scores, officials said the Americans finished 23rd overall, good enough to send a three-man team to the games.
Hamman made just two of six attempts in the 231-pound class. His total lift of 929 1/2 pounds was 5 1/2 pounds less than last year, when he finished fifth at the worlds.
Iran's Hossein Reza Zadeh won the class for the second straight year. He failed in his attempt to break his own world record of 1,039 1/2 pounds on his next-to-last lift and stopped at 1006 1/2 pounds.
Artem Udachin, from the Ukraine, won the silver medal, and Bulgaria's Velichko Cholakov was third.
Qatar's Jaber Salem won the snatch, but was forced to withdraw before the clean and jerk because of an injury.
