WOOSTER -- The Westminster College women's basketball team opened the season with a 64-56 win over Manchester (Ind.) College in the opening round of the Nan Nichols Classic at the College of Wooster Saturday.
Westminster took control of the game from the outset, opening with a 7-0 run over the first 1:28 en route to a 15-point lead (18-3) with 10:41 to play in the opening half.
The Titans were up 18 points (24-6) with 8:59 left before going into halftime ahead by 17 (39-22).
Senior guard Rena Paroz (Brookfield High School) had five assists for the Titans.
Wooster 66, Thiel 49
WOOSTER -- Wooster (1-0) sprinted out to an early 15-4 first-half lead behind eight points from Carly Loehrke.
The Fighting Scots extended their lead to as many as 19, 37-18, but the Tomcats (0-1) were able to score the final five points of the first half to trim Wooster's lead going into halftime to 14, 37-23.
Freshman guard Tatiana Lamon had six points on 3-of-6 shooting to go along with five rebounds to pace the Tomcats in the opening half. Loehrke lead all scorers after the opening 20 minutes with 12 markers, hitting 5-of-6 from the floor.
The Fighting Scots pushed their lead to 20, 54-34, with 8:30 remaining in the game. A jumper by freshman forward Fontella Jones with 2:54 trimmed the Wooster lead to 15, 60-45, but the Tomcats were unable to overcome the 17-point deficit.
Loehrke led all scorers with 14 points to go along with her seven rebounds. Natalie Barone finished with nine points and nine rebounds for Wooster.
Lamon had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tomcats. Senior guard Kerry Gutherie also finished with 10 points, while Jones added a game-high 11 rebounds.
Thiel was to face Manchester College in the consolation game of the Nan Nichols Classic today at 1 p.m.
Grove City 70, Allegheny 55
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Sandy O'Keefe, Jocelyn Kempema, Abby Moose and Rachel Romance scored 16, 15, 15 and 11 points respectively for Grove City (2-0).
O'Keefe shot 15-for-22 and scored 30 points in two games to be named MVP of the Alleghent Tip-Off Tournament.
Jessica Kankoski scored 15 points and Meredith McDonough had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Allegheny (1-1).
Westminster 64, Manchester 56
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Junior forward Erica Tallo scored 19 points as the Titans won their season opener.
Also hitting double figures were Alyson Gasper with 11 and Rachel Eaton with 10. Tallo and Gasper led the Titans in rebounds with 11 and 10, respectively.
