Effort to rename street for MLK faces hurdles

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- An effort by the Shenango Valley Ministerial Association to get four Shenango Valley municipalities to rename the Broadway Avenue corridor in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is having only limited success.
Hermitage city commissioners, meeting in a work session Thursday, objected to the idea.
One commissioner pointed out that it could cost businesses along Broadway thousands of dollars to change their stationery and documents to reflect an address change, City Manager Gary Hinkson said. Another commissioner pointed out that Wheatland has already turned the idea down and the point is moot, Hinkson added.
Farrell City Council took no formal action but indicated it would go along with a plan to rename the corridor in King's honor. Council members also said they thought all four affected municipalities should act as one body on the plan.
Sharon City Council was split on the issue at its October meeting, with President Fred Hoffman saying he would try to arrange a meeting of officials from all four municipalities to discuss the issue.
Broadway runs through Hermitage, Wheatland and Farrell but becomes Dock Street when it enters Sharon.
