Local pastor selected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eastminster Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church USA last week elected the Rev. Dr. Dan Schomer of Columbiana to serve as its general presbyter starting Jan. 1. The general presbyter has a number of duties within the presbytery, the clergy, the congregations and the denomination. The Rev. Dr. Schomer has served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Columbiana for the past 24 years. His selection followed a year-long search for a leader for the 54 churches in the area extending from Akron to Youngstown and from Kinsman to Lisbon.
Church leader honored
WARREN -- Chris Chengelis, a longtime worker for St. John Greek Orthodox Church, will be honored by the church at a recognition dinner at Antone's Banquet Center at 5 p.m. Dec. 7. Former State Sen. Harry Meshel will be the main speaker.
Chengelis has served on the church's parish council for many years, including three years as president. He was a member of the building committee that spearheaded the construction of the present church at 4955 Glenwood Ave. in 1964. He was the last council president of the old church at 109 W. Woodland Ave. and the first at the present church when it opened Nov. 17, 1966.
Chengelis was a Navy representative at the Nuremberg trials and retired after 30 years of active and reserve duty with the rank of commander. He was also president of Industrial and Buckeye Mining until his retirement in 1983.
Tickets are $25 each, and reservations are limited to 150. The deadline is Dec. 1. Call (330) 788-5257 for reservations.
District meeting planned
WARREN -- The Cleveland and Akron districts of United Holy Church of America Inc. will have their first joint district union in a number of years Friday through Nov. 30. The meeting will represent 22 churches in Ohio and will convene at House of Prayer U.H.C.A. Inc., 2016 Wick St.
The schedule: Friday: Missionary Night with guest choir, 7 p.m. Saturday: Bible lecture, 10 a.m.; parade (weather permitting) 1 p.m. from Wick to Niles Road; youth events, 3 p.m.; service with elder Clarence Thomas, president of the Akron District Union, speaking with a choir presentation and dramatic skit, 7:30 p.m. Sunday: school, 9:30 a.m.; worship, 11 a.m. with elder Leonard Mayo, president of the Cleveland District Union.
Pearl harbor Mass
CAMPBELL -- The 62nd annual Pearl Harbor Mass by VFW Post 1423 will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 7 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 124 Keystone St. All veteran posts should assemble a half-hour before Mass.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Area Thanksgiving services include:
UAn ecumenical service, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Hungarian Presbyterian Church, 755 Mahoning Ave. The service will honor Ohio's eight Ohio presidents and the state motto: "With God, all things are possible." Worshippers are asked to bring food for local distribution. Participating churches are: Rockview Christian Church, St. Stephen of Hungary Catholic Church, Historic Lutheran Church of St. John, and the Hungarian Presbyterian Church.

UTrinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., 7 p.m. Wednesday.
UCommunity service, 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 78 E. Liberty St., Girard, with a community choir. Refreshments will follow. The offering will provide Thanksgiving meals through the Emmanuel Center.
Lessons and carols
YOUNGSTOWN -- The annual Festival of Lessons and Carols will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St. The cathedral choir and the Sheet & amp; Tube Brass Quartet will perform Renaissance motets and traditional carols for the Advent and Christmas seasons. A reception will follow.
