ROUNDUP News and notes

Falcons: Michael Vick had a setback Wednesday in his attempt to return to the lineup this weekend. A teammate stepped on the quarterback's right ankle in a walkthrough. Vick, out since fracturing his right leg in a preseason game Aug. 16, was unable to participate in team drills during the two-hour afternoon practice.
Raiders: Three players, including veteran defensive end Trace Armstrong, were placed on injured reserve. Starting linebacker Travian Smith and backup running back Justin Fargas also were placed on IR by the Raiders, who have lost eight players to season-ending injuries since the regular season began.
Packers: Brett Favre's broken right thumb has become a sore subject. Coach Mike Sherman said there's been no change in the X-rays on Favre's thumb even after he banged it on guard Mike Wahle's helmet Sunday at Tampa Bay. Sherman said he anticipates it will be another four weeks before Favre's thumb is healed.
Cardinals: Emmitt Smith practiced Wednesday for the first time since breaking his left shoulder blade nearly seven weeks ago. Coach Dave McGinnis said Smith remains listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against St. Louis.
Giants: Safety Shaun Williams and defensive end Kenny Holmes are through for the season with knee problems. Both players were placed on injured reserve Wednesday. The Giants have lost three defensive starters to injuries.
Dolphins: Quarterback Jay Fiedler was encouraged by his most extensive work since being sidelined with a sprained knee a month ago, and he likes his chances of being able to play against the Redskins. Fiedler said he participated in every drill in practice, some at full speed, and took snaps on back-to-back plays at times Wednesday. Coach Dave Wannstedt said he hasn't decided whether to start Fiedler or Brian Griese, who has played the past four games and struggled in the past three.
Also, wide receiver Oronde Gadsden, who last played more than a year ago was re-signed. Gadsden has 223 career receptions, all with Miami.
Panthers: Safety Jarrod Cooper was suspended by the NFL for four games Wednesday for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The unpaid suspension begins immediately. Carolina's special teams standout will be eligible to return for the final two games of the regular season.
Bills: Travis Henry and Eric Moulds were listed as questionable Wednesday for the game against the Colts. Henry, the Bills' leading rusher, has a broken bone just above his right ankle and isn't expected to practice until Friday. Moulds, the team's leading receiver, has been limited since tearing his groin against Cincinnati on Oct. 5. He missed three of Buffalo's last five games.
Also, safety Lawyer Milloy's fine for bumping an NFL official during a game was reduced from $25,000 to $2,500 after an appeal to the league.
Jaguars: Running back Fred Taylor was listed as probable on the injury report Wednesday and gave his hurting knee a rest by working out on the side in practice. Taylor was sidelined for all but one carry in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Titans due to a twisted knee and a thigh bruise. Tests performed Monday showed no damage.
49ers: Quarterback Tim Rattay will get his third straight start Sunday in Green Bay. Rattay has had two outstanding performances in place of Jeff Garcia, whose injured ankle still isn't back to full strength. Rattay led the 49ers (5-5) to wins over St. Louis and Pittsburgh, completing 40 of 56 passes for 490 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Garcia hasn't played since an overtime loss to Arizona on Oct. 26, when he strained ligaments around his sprained ankle.
Titans: Defensive end Jevon Kearse sat out practice Wednesday, nursing his sprained left ankle while sitting in a cart. The Titans listed Kearse as questionable for Sunday's game at Atlanta (2-8), and coach Jeff Fisher said Kearse probably won't practice this week.
Lions: Rookie wide receiver David Kircus was signed from the practice squad Wednesday. Kircus was drafted by the Lions in the sixth-round out of Grand Valley State. He was cut in September and signed to the practice squad.
Chargers: Strong safety Kwamie Lassiter was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, three days after he sustained a season-ending knee injury.
