Presenting workshop
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Exempted Village Schools team was chosen to present a & quot;The Use of Baldrige Quality Tools to Improve Instruction & quot; workshop at the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference in Columbus earlier this month.
The team included Board of Education President Don Newell, Superintendent Jim Herrholtz, Director of Instruction Lucille Esposito and fifth-grade teacher Heather Rosile. They discussed how, over the past 21/2 years, Hubbard has improved instructional delivery, added programs and used data to drive decision making.
Free placement test
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High School offers a free placement test for incoming freshmen from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 6 in the school cafeteria. Students need to bring two No. 2 pencils, and parents should call (330) 744-4563 to register their child.
Placement tests at JFK
WARREN -- John F. Kennedy High School will be offering a free placement test for incoming ninth-graders. Students need to be in the school cafeteria by 8:30 a.m. Dec. 13, and should bring two No. 2 pencils and a calculator. Parents should register their child by Dec. 5. Engineer mentors needed
Engineers are needed to serve as mentors to middle-school pupils as part of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition. In the competition, seventh- and eighth-graders from all over the state design a city of the future using SimCity 3000 software and create a 3D model of part of their design. Mentors provide technical assistance.
Regional finals are Jan. 24 in Columbus. First-place teams and their mentors receive a free trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national finals Feb. 22-28. Visit www.futurecity.org for details.
EDUCATOR NEWS
McCandless Scholar
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Russell Martin, associate professor of history at Westminster College, has been named McCandless Scholar for the 2003-04 academic year.
The award gives eight credit hours of reassigned time and monetary support for research and scholarship expenses. Martin will travel to Moscow this spring to research original documents at the Archive of Ancient Acts and plans to complete his book "Royal Weddings I Muscovy: 1498-1680."
Martin appeared on an A & amp;E Biography of Ivan the Terrible and has been an expert witness in a Canadian civil trial about the Russian royal family. He is the co-founder of the Muscovite Biographical Database.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and his master's and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Receives Research Award
Former Youngstown State University professor Victoria E. White Kress of Olmsted Falls has received a Research Award from the Ohio Counseling Association. The award is given each year to a counselor who has excelled in contributing research and scholarship to the profession.
White has published a book, and has 15 publications and 29 conference presentations. She has served as a professor at YSU and a counselor at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea.
NEOUCOM associate dean
ROOTSTOWN -- Dr. Clint W. Snyder was recently named as associate dean for medical education at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He will be responsible for helping NEOUCOM redesign its curriculum and will help the university enhance its medical education program.
Snyder earned bachelor's degrees in combined science and sociology from Youngstown State University and received his master's and doctorate degrees in medical sociology from Kent State University.

Jericho program
The Jericho, a New York-based United Scholarship Fund program, offers $165 million in scholarship money for college or for private or Catholic schools. Funds cover tuition, housing and other expenses.

Wanted: top-rate juniors
Discover Financial Services and the American Association of School Administrators seeks exceptional high school juniors for the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship program, offering state scholarships awards of $2,500 and national scholarship awards of $25,000.
Criteria include a grade-point average of at least 2.75, special talents, leadership and community service and the facing of a significant roadblock or challenge.

Awards for minorities
Deadline is Jan. 16 for 2004-05 nominations for Gates Millennium Scholars. The program, supported by the Bill & amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, awards college scholarships to high-achieving minority students.
The United Negro College Fund is the administrator of the program, partnered with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Organization of Chinese Americans. Visit www.gmsp.org for details.
Essay contest planned
The Ohio Farmers Union's 2004 Joseph Fichter Scholarship Contest will award a $1,000 scholarship fund to the winner of an essay contest; two runner-ups will each receive $250.
Eligible are high school juniors and seniors and college freshmen who are OFU members or who have a parent or grandparent who is a member. Participants must submit a typed 500- to 1,000-word essay on & quot;What Values and Cherished Memories Have I Gained by Growing Up on a Family Farm. & quot;
