Teen finds gun in book at Poland library sale

POLAND -- Village police are investigating a report that a .38-caliber handgun was found in the Poland public library.
A 17-year-old boy told police Wednesday that he bought several used books from a sale rack at the library Tuesday. He discovered that one of the books had been hollowed out and contained the unloaded gun. The teen said he took the gun home, loaded it and left it inside the book on his desk.
He called police after talking to a teacher and his mother.
Police said a librarian confirmed that the book had been donated and she put it on the rack without opening it. Other library employees did not remember who donated the book. The firearm was turned over to police.
The gun was Brazilian-made with a Taurus symbol, initials and a date carved above the trigger, police documents show. The book was "Empire: Life, Legend and Madness of Howard Hughes" by Donald Bartlett and James Steele.
