Players break up fight; no charges filed

The two unnamed players could still face team sanctions for curfew violations.
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Two Ohio State football players were investigated -- and cleared -- in a fight outside a dorm near Ohio Stadium early Sunday.
The university and coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday the players were breaking up a fight among a group of women and will not be charged.
"The investigation is over," Buckeyes athletic director Andy Geiger said. "Players will not be charged."
The Buckeyes beat Purdue 16-13 in overtime Saturday at the stadium.
No. 4 Ohio State plays at No. 5 Michigan on Saturday in the team's biggest game of the season, with the winner capturing the outright Big Ten Conference title and assuring itself a spot in a Bowl Championship Series game.
Four females assulted
A campus police report says four female students were assaulted about 4 a.m. Sunday, and a window of one woman's car was broken, according to a campus police report. The women had minor injuries, the report said.
"The women were fighting amongst themselves," university spokeswoman Elizabeth Conlisk said. "They [the players] were trying to break up an altercation. They were not a part of the instigation of it."
The players were among four unnamed suspects on the report, she said. The university declined to release the names.
The two other suspects were women among the group fighting, Conlisk said. Another woman also was involved, she said.
Could face team sanctions
Tressel said the two football players might face team sanctions.
"The part that I can address is that we had some guys out much later than they should be and that we'll need to take care of things in-house to handle that," Tressel said Tuesday at his weekly news conference.
Tressel was asked whether the fact that so much is riding on the Michigan game would influence his decision on possible sanctions.
"I would hope not," Tressel said.
Tressel declined to comment further when asked why the players would face team penalties if they were trying to end the fight.
