LUBBOCK, Texas -- Andre Emmett and Jarrius Jackson each scored 17 points as Texas Tech defeated Davidson 89-58 in a first round preseason NIT game Tuesday night.
Tech (1-0) trailed only briefly in the first half before going ahead for good. By the 2:52 mark in the second half, the Red Raiders had built a 35-point lead and were up 89-54.
Emmett, the leading scorer in the Big 12 last season (21.8 points) was 8-for-15 and got all his points before being taken out with about eight minutes remaining in the game.
Four Tech players scored in double figures. Ronald Ross scored 15 points and Joseph Works added 13 for Tech.
The win was No. 810 for Bob Knight, who is in his third season at Tech.
Tech will play Massachusetts on Friday night.
Massachusetts 80, St. Francis, N.Y. 58
AMHERST, Mass. -- Anthony Anderson scored 21 points, including two 3-pointers in a key 18-2 second-half run, as Massachusetts pulled away for a win over St. Francis, N.Y. in the first round of the Preseason NIT.
Much of the offense came inside as the Minutemen (1-0) scored 52 points in the paint. Sophomore Rashaun Freeman, who sat out last year under NCAA academic guidelines, showed few signs of rust with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Gabe Lee had 11 rebounds and seven blocks.
Georgia Tech 79, Louisiana-Lafayette 45
ATLANTA -- B.J. Elder scored 17 points and Georgia Tech cruised to victory over undermanned Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round of the Preseason NIT.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) will host Hofstra in the second round Thursday.
Georgia Tech had no trouble with the Ragin' Cajuns, who used only eight players and had no one on the bench with any Division I experience. Brad Boyd, the leading scorer last season, was held to six points on 2-of-12 shooting.
Hofstra 79, Marist 74
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Gibran Washington scored half of his 10 points in the final 1:01 and Hofstra beat Marist in the opening round of the Preseason NIT.
Washington, a sophomore guard, gave the Pride the lead for good when he hit his only 3-pointer of the game as the shot clock was running out, making it 76-74 with 1:01 to play.
Women
MT. VERNON -- Jen Rawding scored 27 points in leading Geneva College to a 74-65 victory over Mt. Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday.
A Blackhawk graduate, Rawling was 15-of-19 from the foul line as the Golden Tornadoes, who led 39-33 at halftime, improved to 2-1.
