HANOVERTON -- If the weather cooperates, workers will be moving dirt soon around the United Schools complex. Supt. Glenn Willis said five new classrooms are needed because the district will offer all-day kindergarten in the 2004-05 school year. There are about 106 kindergarten pupils now, and 110 or more are expected next year. He said bids came in about $230,000 under the $1.1 million estimates.
Kreidler Construction Co. of Poland has the site work and general-trades contract with a base bid of $611,746 and alternates of $34,350. Ellyson Plumbing and Heating Inc. of Salem has the plumbing contract at $59,900. Roth Bros. Inc. of Youngstown has the electrical contract at $89,463. The project also includes office space for the elementary principal and assistant principal, and an area where parents can drop off and pick up children. Willis said the work is to be completed by Aug. 1, 2004.
Recycle, Ohio! grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning and Columbiana counties each received $84,900; Youngstown received $56,600; and the Geauga/Trumbull Solid Waste Management District received $162,725 from Recycle, Ohio! grants given for recycling collection, waste reduction activities, community outreach campaigns and litter prevention.
Statewide, 98 communities and counties received $6.9 million Monday from the program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Funding for the program comes from a corporate franchise tax on businesses that manufacture or sell products in Ohio that might become litter.
Amish thrown from buggy
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- An Amish woman was in critical condition this morning after she was thrown from her buggy on Pa. Route 208. Pennsylvania State Police said Ella S. Byler, 66, of Spring Lane, New Wilmington, pulled into the path of a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Richard J. Fiorini, 74, of James Street, New Wilmington. Police said Fiorini was traveling east on Route 208 at 3:21 p.m. Monday. Police said the buggy broke apart and the horse ran off. Byler was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Church break-in, theft
SALEM -- Someone broke into the Methodist Youth Center, 244 S. Broadway Ave., and stole $10, police said. The crime was reported at 6:30 a.m. Monday.
Assaulted in party scuffle
SHARON, Pa. -- A Hermitage man was in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being assaulted at a party in Sharon early today.
Police said Scott Miller, 40, of River Road was struck on the head with a beer bottle during a scuffle with others about 4 a.m. at the party in the 400 block of Grant Street. Police weren't sure how many people were involved, noting that a group of people left the party immediately after the fight and drove to Ohio.
Other witnesses were intoxicated, and police said they were having a difficult time getting a clear picture of what happened. They said Miller suffered a serious head injury. He was first taken to Sharon Regional Health System and then transferred to St. Elizabeth's.
Police said they have suspects' identities .
City pensioners' money
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The city pension board did not decide who will handle city pensioners' money. The group could not make that decision Monday night, when too few board members attended the meeting, said Nancy Miles, board secretary. Seven firms were interviewed by the group. Miles said the pension board's next meeting will be Feb. 2.
