Lemieux will miss three more games
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux will miss at least three more games because of a right hip flexor injury that has already sidelined him for more than two weeks.
"It's not real good news," Penguins coach Eddie Olczyk said Monday. "He's making progress, but he's not going to be there for a while."
Lemieux, the team's all-time leading scorer with 1,700 points, will miss home games against Minnesota and Ottawa Wednesday and Saturday, respectively, and a game Friday at New Jersey.
Hopes to return Nov. 26
Olczyk said the best scenario now is that Lemieux returns to the ice in time for a game against Philadelphia on Nov. 26.
Lemieux, who has not spoken publicly about the injury, has been out of action since leaving the game after the first period of the Penguins 3-2 overtime win against Boston on Nov. 1 at Mellon Arena.
The Penguins have gone 1-5 with Lemieux on the bench.
Last in power plays
Without Lemieux, the team's power play has slipped to dead last of the NHL 30 teams, converting at a ratio of 9.8 percent.
Pittsburgh has scored eight man-advantage goals in 16 games and converted two of 31 (6.5 percent) opportunities in Lemieux's absence.
In the last six games Pittsburgh (4-9-3) has been outscored 29-11, outshot 210-147 and given up more than 35 shots four times.
Prior to the injury, Lemieux was making a move on the NHL's scoring leaders. In eight games, he had one goal and nine points and had notched an assist in each of those games, an eight-game streak unmatched in the NHL so far this season.
Despite missing the last six games, his nine points ties Lemieux with rookie Konstantin Koltsov for third on the Penguins in scoring behind Rico Fata (11), also sidelined with a hamstring pull, and Martin Straka, who has four goals and six assists.
