Thiessen, DiMauroselected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior free safety Scott Thiessen was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team selection and senior fullback Chris DiMauro was a second-team pick, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Thiessen has a 3.59 grade-point average in Special Education.
DiMauro has a 3.30 GPA in Integrated Language Arts.
Thiessen is eligible to become a CoSIDA Academic All-American. The All-America team will be named Dec. 1.
Swimming
YOUNGSTOWN -- Erin Carter earned two individual victories while Lena Arens and Becky Bertuzzi picked up one each as Youngstown State defeated St. Francis (Pa.) and Niagara Saturday at Beeghly Natatorium.
Carter won the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 2.41 seconds) and the 200 backstroke (2:13.00). Arens finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.08) while Bertuzzi earned her first collegiate win in the 200 butterfly (2:24.92).
YSU also claimed the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay (3:50.12).
Jordan Dunn earned a second-place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle and the 500 freestyle while Lauren Connolly finished second in the 200 freestyle. Danielle Blagg was second in the 200 breaststroke and Arens was second in the 100 freestyle.
Kalyn Leveto picked up exhibition wins in 1- and 3-meter diving.
Cross country
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Youngstown State earned the second-best finish in the program's history with a 17th-place at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Saturday.
Tony Orcena ran a personal-best 10-kilometer time of 32 minutes, 40.6 seconds. He earned the fourth-best time in school history.
Lisa Davies' 6-kilometer time of 21:56.8 led the women to a 21st-place finish, a six-place improvement from last year. Davies' 38th-place finish was the second-best overall in school history at the regional meet and the top finish for a freshman.
Behind Orcena's 89th-place finish, Matt Paullin placed 98th (32:55.6), Nick Buzek finished 106th (33:01.5). Kurt Michaelis placed 107th (33:02.2) and Jeremy Riehm rounded out the top five (33:10.3).
For the women, Kim Jendre finished 117th (23:22.8), Lindsay Wojciak placed 129th (23:31.0), Jenn Wenhold finished 141st (23:46.5) and Lindsay Frontz placed 145th (23:51.1).
Team Challenge
YOUNGSTOWN -- The women's basketball, women's golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball programs will compete in the Team Challenge today at Stambaugh Stadium.
The athletes will compete in six events: maximum bench press, a stability ball human chain, plank hold, the farmer's walk, tug of war, and a balloon hunt relay.
The competition is being conducted by YSU's strength and conditioning staff.

BOARDMAN -- Bruce Zoldan, owner of Phantom Fireworks Company and the Phantom Rockets hockey team of the North American Hockey League, which plays at the Ice Zone, will be the speaker at the noon luncheon of the Curbstone Coaches.
The luncheon is held at the Lockwood House and is open to the public.

CLEVELAND -- Browns defensive tackle Gerard Warren has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for his hit last week on Kansas City offensive lineman Brian Waters.

Tkachuk suspended
TORONTO -- St. Louis Blues forward Keith Tkachuk received a three-game suspension from the NHL on Saturday that will cost him more than $365,000. He lost more than $487,000 in a suspension last season.
This latest suspension was for his cross-check to the neck of San Jose defenseman Rob Davison during the second period Thursday.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions activated defensive tackle Luther Elliss from the non-football injury list Saturday, and waived cornerback Jimmy Wyrick.

Hoch, Perry takeone-shot lead
NAPLES, Fla. -- Scott Hoch and Kenny Perry made an eagle and seven birdies on Saturday, giving them the lead after two rounds at the Franklin Templeton Shootout.
The pair shot a 9-under 63 in the better ball format, giving them a one-stroke lead over two-time champions Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron heading into today's final-round scramble.
South Africans extend lead at World Cup
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- South Africa's Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabbatini birdied six of their first seven holes Saturday and finished with a 9-under-par 63 to take a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round of the World Cup.
The South Africans, who led by two strokes going into Saturday's best-ball round, ended the day at 14-under in the World Golf Championships event featuring two-man teams from 23 nations.
Americans Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard were tied for second at 7-under with France's Thomas Levet and Raphael Jacquelin. Both teams shot 4-under-par 68s on the Ocean Course.
Delasin edges closer
MOBILE, Ala. -- Dorothy Delasin shot a 4-under-par 68 and took a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the LPGA Tournament of Champions on Saturday.
Delasin had a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211, one stroke better than Korea's Hee-Won Han on the 6,253-yard, par-72 Magnolia Grove's Crossings Course.
Cohen, Plushenko win at Lalique Trophy
PARIS -- Sasha Cohen skated a technically daring program Saturday to win the women's singles title at the Lalique Trophy for her third Grand Prix victory of the season.
Cohen finished ahead of a field of unpolished competitors. Her nearest rival was Shizuka Arakawa of Japan. Julia Sebestyen of Hungary was third.
In the men's competition, world champion Evgeni Plushenko used a high-energy program to win the men's singles title, while American Michael Weiss fell twice and settled for third.
Bulgarian ice dancers Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviyski won despite a messy fall at the end of their program. Canadians Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon were second, and Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder were third.
In the pairs event, Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin of Russia were in first place after winning the short program Friday. Americans Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn were third, behind China's Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang.
