COLUMBIANA CORNER Pencils using recycled material: something to write home about
That pencil you're using might have once been a pair of blue jeans or a $20 bill.
That is if the pencil is from the Columbiana County recycling and litter prevention program.
As part of a recent effort to publicize its mission, the agency was giving away pencils made from recycled materials.
The blue pencils are fashioned from former denim. The green ones were once currency.
Commissioners get visitors
At a recent Columbiana County commissioners meeting Commissioner Sean Logan noted that the routine pre-meeting recital of the Pledge of Allegiance was particularly loud because the session was being attended by about a dozen members of a leadership class.
Typically, commissioner meetings have sparse attendance.
Logan observed that among the few other times the chamber is packed is when there's a public hearing regarding county sales tax issues, which often are controversial.
Reading volunteers needed
East Palestine Elementary School is continuing its program "East Palestine Reads," a partnership of community organizations, businesses and parents.
Principal Kathy Mamonis said volunteers are needed to commit one hour per week during the school year to read to elementary pupils.
The goal is to help pupils read at the appropriate grade level for them. Call the elementary school at (330) 426-3638.
