LUBBOCK, Texas -- Jia Perkins scored 19 points to lead Texas Tech to victory over Texas-San Antonio in a first-round game of the preseason women's NIT. The Lady Raiders took control late in the first half, fought off a charge midway through the second half and put things out of reach by scoring 16 of the game's final 18 points in their opener. Alesha Robertson added 14 points for Tech, and Casey Jackson and Jolee Ayers-Curry had 11 apiece. Lacy Mingee led Texas-San Antonio with 17 points. Kim Reed finished with 13 in the Roadrunners' first game.
No. 15 Notre Dame 77, No. 22 Auburn 64
BOULDER, Colo. -- Jacqueline Batteast scored 27 points and Katy Flecky added 17 to lead Notre Dame to a win over Auburn in the first round of the WBCA Classic. Natasha Brackett and Marita Payne had 14 points each for Auburn, last year's WNIT champion. Batteast was 6-for-8 from the field in the second half and scored 11 points in the first nine minutes as Notre Dame built a 59-44 lead.
No. 16 Rutgers 58, St. Peter's 40
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Dawn McCullouch scored 13 points, and Rutgers defeated St. Peter's in the first round of the Preseason Women's NIT. Michelle Campbell added 10 points for the Scarlet Knights, who advanced to a second-round game Sunday against Mississippi, which defeated Jackson State 83-58. The victory in the season opener was the 675th in the career of C. Vivian Stringer, making her the fourth coach to reach the milestone. It also was the 600th in the 30-year history of the Rutgers women's program.
No. 19 Utah 76, SE Missouri St. 65
SALT LAKE CITY -- Shona Thorburn scored 24 points and Kim Smith added 17, and Utah opened up by winning in the first round of the Preseason Women's WNIT. Thorburn scored 12 of Utah's first 15 points of the second half in the Utes' 17th straight home win. Jessica Aebi led Southeast Missouri State with 12 points and Kenja White had 11 in their first game. The Otahkians led for the first 5:35 of the second half, but the Utes overcame a 52-48 deficit with a 9-0 run that was capped by Smith's 3-pointer with 12:03 to play.
