SHARON Concert to raise funds for endowment
Admission to Sunday's concert is free, but a $25 donation is suggested.
SHARON, Pa. -- Paul-Andre Bempechat, a French pianist and musicologist, is performing three fund-raising concerts to commemorate the life and work of the late Dr. John Daverio of Sharon.
Daverio was a violinist and a Boston University professor at the time of his death earlier this year.
One of the concerts will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Sharon High School, 1129 E. State St.
Dr. Donna DeBonis, superintendent of the Sharon City School District, said Bempechat contacted the district saying he wanted to create the John Joseph Daverio Memorial Endowment for the Arts at Sharon High School, Daverio's alma mater.
He plans to hold annual fund-raising concerts to fund the endowment, DeBonis said.
The first of three kickoff concerts featuring works by Brahms, Schumann and Schubert was held Friday in Houston, Texas. The third is set for Nov. 21 in Boston.
Objective
Bempechat said he is doing this to honor Daverio for his work as an educator and musician and that Brahms, Schumann and Schubert were Daverio's favorite composers, DeBonis said.
Money from the endowment fund will be used as scholarships for students planning to study music at the college level as well as for special music-related projects.
Admission to the concert is free, but a $25 tax-deductible donation is suggested, DeBonis said.
Bempechat is artist-scholar in residence for the Institut Culturel de Bretagne and holds a research appointment at Harvard University's Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures.
