New release by Niles author
NILES -- Five Star, an imprint of The Gale Group, will release historical romance "The Briar and the Rose," to hardcover this month. The book was written by Laura Mills-Alcott of Niles. Based loosely on the old and tragic ballad "Barbara Allen," the story is set in Regency-era Ireland and England.
Mills-Alcott will be talking to readers and aspiring writers and signing copies of her book Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Bristol Public Library. All proceeds from book sales at this event will be donated to the Imagination Library, a children's literacy foundation that provides free books to children, from birth to age 5, each month.
From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, she will be autographing copies of "The Briar and the Rose" at the Book Nook in the Elm Road Plaza in Warren.
From Dec. 3-14, she will be part of a 15-city book tour with other romance authors, including bestsellers Heather Graham and Teresa Medeiros.
Mills-Alcott and her work have been featured on the Talk America Radio Network, CNN.com, NBC.com and Romantic Times Magazine. She was a consultant for a segment "Why Women Read Romance Novels" for NBC's talk show "The Other Half."

Psychologist givesperspective on divorce
"The Hidden Gift in Divorce: How to Find Hope, Healing and Spiritual Growth When Your Marriage Ends," by Mark C. Brown, Ph.D. (Booklocker.com, $16.95)
Cleveland psychologist Mark C. Brown, Ph.D., recently published a book that gives a new perspective on divorce. "The Hidden Gift in Divorce" explores how divorce can have incredible potential for personal and spiritual growth. Brown notes that divorce can open a world of discovery about our selves and our place in life, things which can be concealed during a marriage. An advocate of marriage and happily married himself, Brown says his book does not promote divorce. Rather, it promotes healing and growth once the decision to end a marriage has been made.
