HALL OF FAME | Girard High



The Girard Hall of Fame's seventh class will be inducted at Leo's Ristorante Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $30. For more information and tickets, contact the Girard High School Athletic Department. Following is biographies of the inductees:
Robert Parilla (class of 1954) -- Earned seven letters in football and track. As a three-year starter on the football team, he twice earned All-Steel Valley honors. As a junior, he rushed for 750 yards and seven touchdowns. As a four-year letterman on the track team, he competed in the 100, 220, 440 and mile relay. He was a three-time Steel Valley champ in the 100, a two-time Steel Valley champ in the 220 and 440 and anchored Girard's championship mile relay team.
Bill Beach (1947) -- A three-year letterman in basketball, playing for coach Phil Koppel. Also was a member of The Vindicator All-Star Bowling League. At age 21, he consistently averaged over 200 in local leagues before turning to the pro tour. He soon became the area's top bowler and one of the best in Ohio in the 1960's & amp; 70's. He has won more than a dozen state tournaments and competed several times on national television in PBA sanctioned events.
Ray Beach (1953) -- As a junior, he was the starting right halfback on a Girard team that finished with a 7-2 record in the SVC. His shift to basketball was as successful, scoring 227 points and was instrumental in helping Girard reach the regional tournament. His senior season he again was the starting right halfback and his contributions led Girard to the SVC with an 8-1 record. He was responsible for 14 touchdowns in 1952, five rushing touchdowns, five passing touchdowns and he caught four touchdown passes. His 860 yards of total offense was second only to Mel Triplett. He was named to the All-SVC first team and scored the winning touchdown in the Steel Valley All-Star game. He ranks 10th as a member of the 100-Point Club with 109 points and held a school record that was recently broken. In basketball, his 398 points as a senior was a school record. His 28-point outburst against Rayen broke the school single game scoring record held previously by Jim Nace in 1949. He would break his own record later that season with a 31-point effort against Boardman. His effort and leadership led the 1953 Indians to a 22-5 record, the SVC championship, the district and regional championships. The Indians made their first ever appearance in the state final four only to lose to Newark 40-39. He was named first team All-SVC and second team final four.
Gregg Augustine (1973) -- He started amateur boxing in 1971 as a sophomore for the Carney/Maiorana stable. In 1971 he won the Youngstown Golden Gloves Novice Division 112-pound. championship. He would retain his Golden Glove title in 1972 and added the Northeast Ohio AAU Championship. Later that year, he advanced to the National Golden Gloves competition in Minneapolis where he won his first fight. In 1973 he moved up in to the 118-pound division and captured a third Youngstown Golden Gloves title. His amateur record of 46-5 with 27 knockouts rank him as one of the finest amateur boxers the Valley has ever produced. After a short professional career of 11 fights that produced a record of 7-3-1, he began training in 1983 at the Starr Athletic Club in Girard. In 1985 he started promoting amateur fights and soon on a professional basis by bringing his first pro fight to Sharpsville, Pa., in 1988. His efforts to promote the sport earned him the Legends of Leather 1988 "Man of the Year" award. He was recently inducted into the Legends of Leather Hall of Fame.
Tom Chismark (1974) -- As a sophomore in basketball, he scored a school record 277 points. His 15.3 career scoring average is among the highest in school history and his 383 career field goals are a school record. He was All-Mahoning Valley Conference second team as a junior and senior and was All-Northeast Ohio and Prep All-American in 1974. He ranks third in scoring behind Nick Cochran and Charlie Pusin. His 865 career points in just 57 games left him one point shy of tying the school scoring record. In football, he was a two-way performer and handled the punting duties with a 38-yard average. As a receiver, he averaged 25 yards per catch. His school record of 10 interceptions in 1974, still stands. He was first team All-MVC and All-Northeast Ohio and honorable mention AP and UPI All-Ohio for defense.
Bob Steele (1977) -- As a two-year starter in football, he helped the Indians to a fifth-place ranking in Region 5. He was fourth in rushing in the MVC and second in kickoff returns in 1976. He was first team all-conference the "Back of the Year" by the Girard Lions Club. In basketball, he was a member of the 1976 sectional championship team and in 1977 helped the team win the MVC title. He was first team All-MVC in 1977, honorable mention All-Northeast Ohio and was nominated by the Trumbull County Coaches Association for the Outstanding Citizen-Athlete Award.
Chester Mitchell (1976) -- Regarded as one of the top all-around athletes in school history. "Chet the Jet" received 12 letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was a three-year letterwinner in football as quarterback and defensive back. He was All-MVC three years and All-Northeast Ohio twice. He scored 106 career points. In basketball, he was a four-year letterman and scored 35 points in one game his freshman season. He was first team All-MVC his senior season. He also earned three letters in baseball as a pitcher and outfielder.
Ron Mamrick (1988) -- He played golf, earning four letters, and basketball. He was three-time first team All-MVC and two-time conference medalist. He was district runner-up and regional medalist and was Girard's first golfer to qualify for the state tournament. He finished in the top 20 as a junior and the top 10 in the 1987 Class AA state championships. In his final two seasons at Girard, he was medalist in 27 of 34 matches, leading Girard to the MVC championship with a 14-1 record in 1987. His season scoring average of 37.8 as a junior and 38.4 as a senior were best in the MVC.
Bob Sanders (Community Service Award) -- He is a retired Girard teacher who coached four sports. He was track coach for 16 years, cross country coach for three years and golf coach for two years. He also served as an assistant football coach for 17 years. He is a 1951 graduate of North High and later graduated from Youngstown University after military service. He is the junior high track and field coach.
