Trial postponed
SALT LAKE CITY -- The bribery trial of two Salt Lake City bid leaders was abruptly postponed after a key government witness was assigned a federal defender amid revelations he may have pocketed bid committee funds.
U.S. District Judge David Sam ended the session after a meeting in his chambers with prosecutors and defense lawyers. Sam explained through a court spokeswoman only that the trial would resume Friday.
It wasn't immediately clear how the development might set back the case against bid chief Tom Welch and deputy Dave Johnson, who are accused of showering $1 million in cash, gifts and payments on IOC members who awarded Salt Lake the 2002 Winter Games.
