YOUNGSTOWN Latino health conference set Nov. 21

Two speakers from Youngstown will make presentations.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The second Statewide Ohio Latino/Hispanic Health Disparities Conference will be Nov. 21 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 7701 N. High St., Worthington.
The conference is sponsored by Ohio Latino/Hispanic Health Coalition, a network of Latino health professionals and advocates. The theme is "Strengthening Our Healthcare Leadership and Networking Skills."
"The Latino population currently faces a number of significant health challenges and disparities, including disproportionately high rates of diabetes, asthma, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and heart disease," coalition officials said in a press release. "The intent of this conference is to address some of the health disparity issues, on a statewide basis, through networking and strategic action planning."
Main speakers
The main speakers will be Dr. Elena Rios from the National Hispanic Medical Association in Washington D.C., and Felix Lopez, executive director, National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco, also in Washington.
Also scheduled are two workshops, which will include presentations by Dr. Gilda I. Mateo of Forum Health and Dr. Luis Villaplana of Youngstown. Conference hours are 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. for registration and continental breakfast, with the conference scheduled from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration deadline is Tuesday.
