SALEM -- Police are warning the owner of a pig that's been frightening children.
Residents near the 700 block of Pidgeon Road have complained that the pig has been getting loose and chasing youngsters at a nearby bus stop.
Police were notified of the situation Wednesday and issued a warning to the animal's owner that a citation would be issued if the problem persists.
Late graduate leavesfossil collection to SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A Slippery Rock University graduate bequeathed his collection of fossils to the university, providing opportunities for students to examine the plant and geology of western Pennsylvania as it existed 320 million years ago.
Louis Souzer, a 1977 biology graduate, and his wife, Ann, collected the 70 fossils on their property in Mercer County over many years. Louis Souzer died six months ago and gave the collection through his will.
Students will be able to visit the site to investigate how the plants were preserved.
Typically fossils form after a rapid burial of plant or animal life in layers of mud that over millions of years harden to stone.
School board to meet
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Springfield Board of Education will have a special meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at New Springfield Church of God, 3649 Garfield Road.
A board notice says the purpose of the meeting will be to discuss district finances, the district's five-year forecast, and pupil enrollment projection. No action is expected to be taken.
Probing case of fraud
SALEM -- The state bureau of motor vehicles is investigating what appears to be a fraud case, police say.
Police were called to the license bureau on Second Street last week after a man with suspicious information and paperwork tried to use the material to obtain a state identification card.
The matter was turned over to motor vehicle investigators for further scrutiny.
Police learn arrested manlied about being a teen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police say a man who said he was a juvenile after being arrested on drug charges is really 20 years old.
Darryl Eric Hill of Detroit, Mich., was charged with giving false identity to police after the FBI identified his fingerprints.
Hill and another person, who also claims to be a juvenile, were arrested Monday on Pin Oak Drive.
Police said packets of suspected crack cocaine were found on both men.
The second person is being held at the Krause Juvenile Center until his identity can be determined.
Police Chief John Kindel said officers refiled drug charges in adult court and Hill is now in Lawrence County Jail.
Homeland Security grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency has received a $581,947 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Walter Duzzny, EMA director, said the money will be used to buy equipment for local safety forces to use in responding to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive incidents.
The county has received more than $800,000 this year in homeland security funding toward the purchase of such equipment, Duzzny said.
Investigating phone bill
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that someone in Toledo used a Backwater Cove man's name and Social Security number to charge $7,000 in phone calls.
The man called police Monday after learning about the bill. He said he didn't know anyone in Toledo.
Line of trucks gets stucknear construction site
YOUNGSTOWN -- A convoy of 10 trucks, each carrying an 86-foot-long concrete support beam for the new Pine Hollow Bridge in Mill Creek Park, halted on Volney Road on Wednesday afternoon after the lead truck was unable to negotiate the turn onto Ottawa Drive.
Over several hours, a crane had to lift the back end of the trucks to get them around the corner, according to Steve Avery, the park's chief landscape architect. Only one truck at a time could enter the construction site, he said.
The bridge is on the park's East Cohasset Hike and Bike Trail where Ottawa Drive dead-ends in barricades at the park entrance.
