Capitals 7, Hurricanes 1
WASHINGTON -- Robert Lang had three goals in a game for the first time and Dainius Zubrus scored twice for Washington. Robert Willsie and Alexander Semin also scored for the Capitals, who had lost 10 of their previous 12 games. Lang, who also had an assist, extended his team-best point streak to seven games with a wrist shot through the legs of Kevin Weekes 1:24 into the first period. Lang added his second of the night to cap a third-period flurry in which the teams combined to score four goals in 1:16. Zubrus started the spurt when he scored his second goal of the game 3:34 into the period, forcing Weekes from the net. Ryan Bayda had the Carolina goal.
Devils 2, Sabres 2
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Maxim Afinogenov's third-period goal gave Buffalo a tie in the first NHL regular season game in Rochester. Jamie Langenbrunner had a goal and assist for the Devils, unbeaten in their last seven (5-0-2) games. Martin Brodeur made 26 saves for the Devils. Buffalo's Martin Biron had 33 stops.
Flames 6, Blackhawks 2
CHICAGO -- Rookie Matthew Lombardi got his first NHL hat trick, and Dean McAmmond added two goals for Calgary. Chris Clark also connected for the Flames, who ended a three-game losing streak. Entering the game, Calgary had just 24 goals, the fewest in the NHL, and had not scored more than four goals in a game this season. Brett McLean and Steve McCarthy scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight following a three-game winning streak. The Flames' Jamie McLennan stopped 31 shots. Michael Leighton started in goal for Chicago, but was replaced by Craig Anderson at 8:59 of the second after allowing five goals on 21 shots.
Red Wings 6, Stars 2
DALLAS -- Steve Yzerman and Pavel Datsyuk scored two goals each, and Detroit extended the Dallas losing streak to four games. Steve Thomas, signed as a free agent on Nov. 5, got his first goal for Detroit and the 412th of his career. Mathieu Schneider added a short-handed goal and Brendan Shananan had two assists for the Red Wings. Bill Guerin and Brenden Morrow scored for the Stars, have lost four in a row for first time since the 1995-96 season. The Stars (7-8-1) haven't been under .500 after 16 games since that same season.
Mighty Ducks 5, Maple Leafs 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Andy McDonald and Sergei Fedorov had two goals and an assist apiece, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves as the Anaheim beat Toronto. The Leafs, who changed conferences after the 1997-98 campaign, had not made the 2,157-mile trip from Toronto to Anaheim since beating the Ducks 3-1 on March 11, 1998. Mikael Renberg scored for Toronto in the opener of its six-game road trip. Anaheim broke it open with a three-goal second period against Ed Belfour, whose 23 victories and 10 shutouts are the most he's had against any opponent.
