RMI Titanium to resume talks with union Friday
WEATHERSFIELD -- RMI Titanium will resume talks at 10 a.m. Friday with United Steelworkers of America Locals 2155 and 2155-7, which represent about 380 hourly workers at the Weathersfield titanium mill.
It's the third bargaining session scheduled since the workers rejected a company contract offer Oct. 25, the day their previous three-year pact expired. Union officials said workers were willing to continue working while talks continued, but the company locked the gates, and salaried employees have been operating the plant. Union members have set up informational pickets outside the plant gates.
Hoover Co. lays off 30 salaried employees
NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Hoover Co. vacuum cleaner manufacturer has laid off 30 salaried employees at its North Canton plant as a cost-cutting move, officials said. The affected employees worked in several areas of engineering and manufacturing.
Hoover's parent company, Maytag Corp., announced in April that it would eliminate 500 salaried jobs -- about 8 percent of that work force -- at the same time it announced a 39 percent drop in earnings.
In June, Hoover announced about 500 production-worker layoffs in North Canton because of declining sales.
About 115 workers were recalled one month later.
