Nash's goal nets tie for Jackets on road

Columbus remains winless in seven games away from Nationwide Arena.
MONTREAL (AP) -- Saku Koivu wants the Montreal Canadiens to aim higher than they did in their latest effort.
"We have to be happy with a tie, but we have to learn," the Montreal captain said after the Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets tied 1-1 on Tuesday night.
Rick Nash scored a power-play goal for Columbus in the second period to tie it after Michael Ryder gave Montreal a 1-0 lead earlier in the period. The Canadiens are 2-6-1 in their past nine games.
"It doesn't matter who you play against," Koivu said. "It doesn't matter how you played your last game. You have to have your game face on and you have to show up and play hard."
Held without a point in his three previous games, Nash scored his team-leading ninth goal with 6:54 left in the second. The Blue Jackets are winless in seven road games (0-5-1-1).
"We've been struggling on the road big-time this year," Nash said. "It would have been nice to come out with two points, but we'll take the point and go into Ottawa [Thursday] and try to get another two."
Penalty-killing success
The Canadiens failed to score on four power plays in the first period, and the Blue Jackets outshot them 12-2 in the first 20 minutes.
Montreal went 0-for-5 with the man advantage and has just four goals in its last 55 power-play opportunities.
"We have to capitalize on those power plays," coach Claude Julien said. "If we get a goal or two, we've got a much different game."
Ryder scored an odd goal 2:49 into the second with inadvertent help from Columbus defenseman Luke Richardson. Canadiens left wing Mike Ribeiro set up Ryder in front of the net, and Richardson swiped at the puck and pushed it up Ryder's blade, over goalie Marc Denis' right shoulder, and into the net.
"That's one of those slow-motion moments where you wish you could move faster than the puck's actually going," Denis said. "Once it went over my head, I knew it was too late."
Begin assists
Steve Begin did his part to help the Blue Jackets draw even on Columbus' third power play. Begin kicked the puck along the boards from the right corner, but David Vyborny cut off the play behind the net.
Vyborny passed in front to Nash, who lifted a shot over Mathieu Garon's glove.
"It was a great pass by Vyborny," Nash said. "I only had to lift it over Garon's glove hand -- he kind of dropped it."
Garon stopped 35 shots, including a toe save on Trevor Letowski's shot late in the third, and a big stop on Todd Marchant's chance 17 seconds into overtime.
Montreal nearly won with about two minutes left in the extra period. Sheldon Souray's slap shot from just outside the blue line struck Denis' glove and trickled just wide.
Denis made six of his 30 saves in overtime.
Notes
Nash didn't get his ninth goal last season until Jan. 11. He has just one assist in 14 games. ... Canadiens D Stephane Quintal missed his third straight game after developing an irregular heartbeat before a 2-1 loss in Buffalo on Friday. Quintal, whose wife is due to give birth to the couple's first child any day, hopes to rejoin the lineup Saturday.
