NFL ROUNDUP | News and notes

Jaguars: The NFL fined defensive lineman Marcus Stroud $5,000 for a hit on Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair two weeks ago. A statement released by the NFL said Stroud "took two steps and unnecessarily struck" McNair. After the game, Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said he felt McNair got "star treatment." On Monday, he backed off that comment slightly, but nonetheless encouraged Stroud to appeal the fine.
49ers: Tim Rattay is likely to make another start at quarterback Monday night against the Steelers in place of the injured Jeff Garcia, who has a partially torn ligament around his sprained left ankle. Rattay threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Rams two weeks ago in his first NFL start.
Broncos: Fullback Mike Anderson tested positive for marijuana and will be suspended for four games by the NFL, according to published reports. The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News reported in today's editions that Anderson failed a drug test and will be suspended by the league.
Also, kicker Jason Elam sat out practice Monday to rest his strained groin and won't know if he can play this week until after testing it with some kicks on Wednesday. Elam was injured while taking practice kicks on the sideline against New England on Nov. 3. He missed a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter but pulled up on a 43-yarder that he made in the second quarter.
Dolphins: Safety Trent Gamble was placed on injured reserve. Making his first career start Sunday, Gamble injured his knee covering a punt in the first quarter. His roster spot was filled with guard Brad Bedell.
Seahawks: Defensive tackle Norman Hand will have season-ending surgery on the torn biceps tendon on his right arm. Hand was hurt Nov. 1 during a 23-16 win over Pittsburgh. He had a similar injury on his left arm earlier in his career.
Raiders: Rick Mirer is likely to start again Sunday against the Vikings. Injured starter Rich Gannon, the 2002 NFL MVP, still hasn't thrown a pass in practice since tearing the labrum in his throwing shoulder Oct. 20 against Kansas City, and coach Bill Callahan isn't sure when Gannon will be ready.
Panthers: Stephen Davis, the NFC's leading rusher, is still bothered by a sprained ankle and his status is unknown for Sunday's game against the Redskins. Davis, who has 992 yards rushing this season, missed Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay. Davis has made little secret of his animosity toward the Redskins after they released him over the winter. He felt he was cast off because coach Steve Spurrier didn't think Davis fit into his passing-dominated offense.
Bills: Receiver Eric Moulds is still bothered by a groin injury but expects to play hurt the rest of the season. "I'm basically about 80 percent," Moulds said Monday, a day after he managed just five catches for 32 yards in Buffalo's 10-6 loss at Dallas. The game was Moulds' second after he missed two straight with a slight groin tear. Moulds said he's having difficulty running deep routes and can feel soreness when he's tackled, which has led him to sliding more after he makes a catch.
Vikings: Special teams captain and backup safety Jack Brewer might need season-ending surgery on his torn right pectoral muscle. Brewer was hurt making a tackle on a kickoff in Sunday's loss to the Chargers. The initial diagnosis was a dislocated right shoulder, but further evaluation Monday revealed a tear in the muscle just below the shoulder. Brewer will consult with doctors this week and decide on surgery. Brewer missed the first three games with a bruised chest. After making the team last year as an undrafted rookie, Brewer led the Vikings with 26 special-teams tackles in 2002.
Patriots: Defensive lineman Ted Washington and linebacker Ted Johnson could practice this week in preparation for Sunday night's game against the Cowboys. Johnson broke his foot in Week 1 and hasn't been back. Washington broke his leg in Week 3 and has been out since.
Cardinals: Center Pete Kendall was examined Monday at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix after receiving a neck stinger in Sunday's loss to the Steelers. Safety Adrian Wilson hurt his right hand in the game. Results of Kendall's tests were not immediately available, but coach Dave McGinnis was optimistic. Wilson had his hand X-rayed and put in a cast before the flight home. Also, Tim Duncan, who missed an extra-point kick after the Cardinals' first touchdown, was waived. The Cardinals are looking for another kicker to fill in for injured Bill Gramatica. Gramatica kicked Monday and his sore back hurt afterward, clouding the issue of when he will be available.
