Green Bay lets win slip away
Quarterback Brett Favre had a miserable night in the rain.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Philadelphia Eagles are a solid road team, love playing in prime time and are magnificent in wintery weather.
Who knew they liked playing in the rain, too?
Todd Pinkston's 6-yard touchdown catch from Donovan McNabb with 27 seconds remaining gave Philadelphia a 17-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers on a rainy Monday night at Lambeau Field.
The Eagles (6-3) won for the 22nd time in 29 road games, extended their record on Monday night to 5-1 under coach Andy Reid and improved to 22-5 in games in November and December since 2000.
The constant drizzle didn't bother them one iota.
Blame
The Packers (4-5), on the other hand, fumbled six times, including three by Brett Favre. The Green Bay quarterback also threw an interception and blamed the sloppiness on a combination of the bad weather and his broken right thumb.
Packers halfback Ahman Green rushed for a team-record 192 yards and scored on a 45-yard run and a 24-yard screen pass. But he fumbled two more times, giving him an NFL-leading seven.
"The balls were very, very slick," Packers coach Mike Sherman said. "It seemed to affect us more than it did them, however, which concerns me."
The Packers lost their grip not only on the football but on their old home-field dominance.
They're still an NFL-best 13-2 at home in November and December since 2000, but they've lost three times at home for just the second time in 12 years.
"This place has been almost a shoo-in over the years," Favre said. "I just think it shows there are no sure things."
The Packers have the league's easiest remaining schedule, based on opponents' records, but "every time we lose one of these games, it's tough to rebound," Favre said. "The NFC is wide open. We're not out of it, but we're digging a hole."
The Eagles stayed a game behind Dallas in the NFC East thanks to Pinkston, who's dropped several passes this year and hadn't gotten into the end zone.
Reid said he chose to attack backup cornerback Bhawoh Jue, who replaced starter Al Harris five plays earlier.
"He just beat me on the corner, how else can I explain it?" said Jue, who also was victimized for the game-winning score by Kansas City last month.
The Packers drove to midfield with eight seconds remaining when Favre fumbled for the third time and Darwin Walker recovered for Philadelphia.
Winning drive
"We just have to find ways to make it a little easier," said McNabb, who completed passes of 11 yards to Duce Staley and 20 yards to Chad Lewis on the winning drive, which started at the Eagles 35 with 2:42 remaining.
Green's 45-yard TD on fourth-and-1 with seven minutes remaining gave Green Bay a 14-10 lead.
Favre had a miserable night, throwing for just 109 yards with one TD, one interception and three fumbles. McNabb said he had to tighten his grip, something Favre had trouble doing with a plastic splint glued to his thumb.
Green and Favre each fumbled twice in the first half before hooking up on a 24-yard touchdown on a screen pass for a 7-0 halftime lead.
