FOXBORO, Mass. -- New England advanced to the MLS Eastern Conference championship. New England beat the MetroStars 2-0 in the series opener. The Revolution, unbeaten in nine matches (7-0-2), will face the Chicago Fire Friday in a single-game semifinal match. Patrick Noonan scored his second goal of the playoffs in the 21st minute for New England, converting a pass from Dario Fabbro with an 18-yard shot into the far right corner. The MetroStars tied the match in injury time at the end of the first half on a penalty kick by Amado Guevara. The MetroStars were awarded the chance after New England defender Carlos Laamosa took down the Mike Magee in the penalty box area.

CHICAGO -- Damani Ralph and Ante Razov scored for Chicago, which swept the two-game, aggregate-goal series 4-0. Ralph put Chicago on the board in the 17th minute. After passes from Razov and Chris Armas, Ralph sent a shot high into the right corner from 23 yards for his first playoff goal. Razov gave Chicago a two-goal lead in the 55th minute. Orlando Perez passed along the left sideline to DaMarcus Beasley, who sent a cross to Razov inside the 6-yard box. Razov beat midfielder Ryan Nelsen to the ball and headed a shot back toward the left side and past goalkeeper Doug Warren. The goal made Razov, Chicago's career-points leader, the MLS record holder for postseason points. The Fire forward has 30 points on 10 goals and 10 assists, putting him two points ahead of Roy Lassiter, Mauricio Cienfuegos and Jaime Moreno. Fire goalkeeper Zach Thornton got his 10th playoff shutout, adding to his own MLS record.
Earthquakes 5, Galaxy 2, OT
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Rodrigo Faria scored in overtime to cap a five-goal rally, giving San Jose a berth in the Western Conference championship. Chris Roner scored on a header in the final minute of regulation, giving the Earthquakes a 4-2 lead, tying the aggregate-score series at 4-all and forcing overtime. The Galaxy beat the Earthquakes 2-0 in the series opener on Nov. 1. On Richard Mulrooney's free kick from the right side, Roner squeezed his way between two defenders and headed the ball past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. In overtime, Faria took a pass from Landon Donovan just inside the box and beat Hartman, setting off a wild celebration on the field and in the stands. Jamil Walker gave the Earthquakes a 3-2 lead with a header in the 50th minute. The Galaxy opened a 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes. Carlos Ruiz scored on a header in the 7th minute, converting a pass from Hong Myung-Bo. In the 13th minute, Peter Vagenas took a pass from Alejandro Moreno at the top of the box, dribbled through a pair of defenders and beat goalkeeper Pat Onstad. The Earthquakes countered less than eight minutes later when Jeff Agoos scored off a tap from Ronnie Ekelund on an indirect kick from just outside the box. In the 35th minute, Hartman came out to challenge Walker, who passed to Donovan. Donovan put the ball into the empty net.
