3 hurt in accident
BOARDMAN -- Three vehicles were involved in an accident at 10:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. Route 224 at Mill Creek Boulevard, said the Ohio State Highway Patrol at the Canfield post. David Albani, 18, of Boardman was southbound on Mill Creek and stopped at the stop sign at 224. Bryan Munnell, 17, of Canfield was traveling west on 224; and Betty McKendry, 57, of Boardman was eastbound.
When McKendry tried to turn left to go north on Mill Creek, she struck Munnell's vehicle, the patrol said. Munnell's vehicle then spun and struck Albani's car before going off the road and catching fire, the patrol said. The three drivers were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment, the patrol said.
Shot in robbery attempt
BOARDMAN -- Michael Zarlengo, 40, of East Liberty Road, Lowellville, told police he was shot in the leg during a robbery attempt while he was washing his car Friday night at JJA Car Wash on Western Reserve Road, said Capt. Gerry Patterson. Two men approached, one of whom demanded money and struggled with Zarlengo. The robber's gun went off and the suspects fled on foot. Zarlengo drove himself for treatment at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Market Street.
Officer injured
BOARDMAN -- Township Patrolman Glenn Patton received neck and shoulder injuries about 10 p.m. Friday when the driver of a stolen 1995 Buick put it in reverse and rammed Patton's cruiser just as he was getting out of it on Forest Park Drive, police said. The car then sped off. The cruiser sustained about $3,000 in damage.
Shortly afterward, Youngstown police spotted the stolen car on Ellenwood Avenue and found two suspects, a 15-year-old boy and 18-year-old Tome Shaw of West Delason Avenue, in a house on Ellenwood where they'd gone to use a phone, police said. Both faces charges of receiving stolen property.
Sergeant awarded
AUSTINTOWN -- Police Sgt. Steven Garstka received the police rescue ribbon Monday for trying to save the life of a Canfield man who drowned. Garstka waded into the retention pond in the Heron's Landing development, off New Road, at about 8:30 a.m. Oct. 30 to try to find Gary Wells, 44.
Wells, a laborer for the Heron's Landing developer, was in a canoe that capsized in the pond. Garstka flipped the canoe over and paddled to the middle of the retention pond; however, he could not find Wells. Mahoning County dive team members pulled Wells from the pond about 90 minutes later. Garstka received the ribbon from Police Chief Gordon Ellis at Monday's trustees meeting. Federal workplace safety investigators are looking into Wells' death.
Bond set in robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bond was set Monday in municipal court at $25,000 cash or surety for Marc A. Ellington, 20, of Hillman Street, who is accused of robbing Inner Circle Pizza, 2704 Mahoning Ave. He will be back in court Nov. 18. The restaurant owner told police that he fired three shots at two robbers who left the restaurant with $85 and ran east on Mahoning about 8:20 p.m. Saturday. Police said the second suspect is Ellington's 17-year-old brother, also named Marc A. Ellington, of Lemans Drive, who was struck by a bullet in his left side. The younger Ellington was taken to the juvenile justice center on a robbery charge.
Crashes in rain
YOUNGSTOWN -- Speed on rain-slicked roads contributed to a rash of crashes by 10:30 a.m. today on the freeways downtown, police said. Six fender-benders occurred at a curve on the Himrod Avenue expressway. One pregnant woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, police said. Another crash happened on the Himrod Avenue expressway, police said.
Vandalized cars
YOUNGSTOWN -- Roughly 20 cars at Texas Auto Wrecking on Poland Avenue were vandalized sometime over the weekend, the owner told police. Dash-mounted stereos and other items were removed from the vehicles, police said today.
