VOLLEYBALL Cincinnati St. Ursula, Alter win state championships



Orrville and Centersburg won in the smaller divisions.
FAIRBORN (AP) -- Maggie Schmelze had 14 kills and eight digs to lead Cincinnati St. Ursula to its record eighth state volleyball championship Saturday with a 15-10, 15-7 win over Cincinnati Ursuline in the Division I final.
The Bulldogs (29-0) finished as the only undefeated team in the state.
They have won all eight of their titles in the last 11 years -- six in Division II and two in Division I. St. Ursula had shared the record of seven titles with Newark Catholic.
The two teams met in the Division I championship for the third straight year. St. Ursula beat Ursuline in 2001 and lost to the Lions (25-4) last year.
Beth Gillming had nine kills, eight digs and nine blocks for St. Ursula and Beth Shelton had nine kills and 12 digs.
For Ursuline, Stephanie Blackburn had 12 kills and 10 digs, Carli Reihman had 10 kills and five digs and Jeanna Staun had nine kills and seven digs.
Div. II
Carrie DeMange had 20 kills, nine digs and three blocks to lead Kettering Alter to a 15-3, 15-11 win over Millersburg West Holmes to capture the Div. II title.
It was the second consecutive year that Alter (27-2) has beaten West Holmes (25-4) for the championship.
DeMange's first 14 attempts went for kills. She had one error in 29 attempts.
Mandy Robbe added six kills and five digs for Alter, while Ali Hausfeld had three kills, 27 assists and five digs.
West Holmes was led by Tristen Dye, who had 12 kills and five digs. Mandy Humphrey added six kills and six digs, while Morgan McDowell had 22 assists.
Alter never trailed in either game, although West Holmes cut Alter's 9-1 lead to lead to 11-9 in the second game.
Div. III
TaNeisha Winters had 14 kills and three blocks to lead Orrville to a 15-5, 15-9 win over Versailles and the school's first Div. III title.
Erica Short added 10 kills and 12 digs for Orrville (28-1). Katelyn Orr had 10 digs, while Kara Guster had 31 assists and three service aces.
Versailles (22-7) was led by Cheri Stammen, who had eight kills, 10 assists and four digs. Kara Hemmelgarn had five kills and 10 digs.
Orrville led in the entire first game, but the Tigers jumped out to 9-1 lead in second game. The Red Riders scored the final 14 points to take the match.
It was the first state championship appearance for both schools.
Div. IV
Ami Stevens had 24 kills, six aces and eight digs to lead Centerburg to its first state championship with a 15-9, 15-12 win over St. Henry in the Div. IV title match.
With the first game tied at nine, Stevens had four straight aces to give the Trojans (29-1) a 13-9 lead.
The Redskins (27-2) took a 10-6 lead in the second game, but Centerburg ran off eight straight points. The first four points came on kills by Stevens and St. Henry committed errors on the last four points.
The Trojans won their first title in their fourth trip to the finals. The Redskins finished second for the third time and have won five championships.
Bryee Hawkins had 25 assists for Centerburg, and Tiffany Milburn had six kills and seven digs.
Nicole Elking had six kills and eight digs for St. Henry. Lindsay Hess had five kills and five digs and Lindsay Puthoff had five kills, five digs and five blocks.
