REGIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Getsy, Ekis set records in Titans' loss



The Youngstown-area natives sparkled in a 41-39 setback to Thomas More.
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Joe Getsy and Brian Ekis set Westminster College single-game passing records, but the Titans still dropped a 41-39 decision to Thomas More Saturday.
Getsy, a graduate of Lowellville High School, completed 26 of 43 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns.
The Titan record for passing yards in a game was 364 set by James Graham against Saginaw Valley St. on Oct. 9, 1999.
Ekis, from Boardman High, caught 13 passes for 221 yards and scores of 17 and 5 yards. The Westminster standard of 11 receptions was held by three players.
The old record of 218 yards receiving was established by Dave Foley against West Virginia Wesleyan on Oct. 15, 1988.
Tyran Thompson rushed 28 times for 132 yards to lead Thomas More. Each team is 5-4.
The Titans pulled within two points, 41-39, with 3 seconds remaining when Getsy hit Ekis with a 5-yard touchdown completion. The conversion pass try was broken up.
Alfred 14, Thiel 9
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Ron Duliba scored two touchdowns to pace Alfred.
Alfred (5-5) opened the scoring with a 1-yard run by Duliba with 9:45 left in the first quarter. The 5-play, 37-yard drive was set up by Aaron Meyers' interception and return of 27 yards.
Thiel (2-7) put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive in the second quarter and scored on a 10-yard run by Justin Napotnik (Sharpsville High), but the extra point attempt by Paul Stibich failed.
Alfred increased its lead to 14-6 with a 6-yard touchdown run. The score capped a 5-play, 79-yard drive and came with 1:33 left in the second quarter. The key play in the drive was a 57-yard pass from Duliba to Jack Sprague.
Thiel's only other points came on a 33-yard field goal by Stibich on the last play of the first half.
Alfred had 270 yards in total offense. Duliba completed 15 of 19 passses for 187 yards.
Walsh 41, Urbana 3
URBANA -- Dan Kane threw for a touchdown and ran for another in Walsh's victory.
Kane threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Chris Brink in the first quarter. His 1-yard touchdown run put the Cavaliers (8-2, 5-0 in the Mid-States) up 34-3 with 8:55 left in the fourth.
Josh Stutzman scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Alex Gray returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown in the third. Artice Walton added a 10-yard run with 38 seconds left.
Michael Lum hit field goals of 40 and 24 yards.
Hollist Histed's 32-yard field goal just before halftime was Urbana's (3-7, 2-3 ME) only score.
Allegheny 42, Earlham 21
RICHMOND, Ind. -- Brian Woods had three touchdown catches and returned a punt 65 yards for a fourth score as Allegheny clinched at least a tie for the North Coast Conference championship with the victory.
It was the sixth straight win for Allegheny (6-3, 6-0), which can clinch the outright championship next week with a victory over Ohio Wesleyan.
Woods had six receptions for 172 yards, including TD catches of 59, 4 and 65 yards, all from Bubba Smith. Smith, who was 9-of-18 for 194 yards, also had a touchdown pass to Jon Turner of 11 yards.
Allegheny led 29-6 after three quarters and got its final two touchdowns on passes to Woods in the final period. Earlham also had two TDs in the fourth quarter on passes of 60 and 7 yards from Justin Rummell to Jeremiah King.
Rummell was 20-of-34 for 298 yards, while King finished with 156 yards on six receptions.
Indiana, Pa. 27, Slippery Rock 14
INDIANA, Pa. -- Kevin Weidl threw two touchdown passes to Joe Slappy to lead Indiana, Pa. to the triumph.
Weidl completed 15 of 22 passes for 264 yards and gave Indiana is first points with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Slappy with 4:38 into the game. He also found Slappy on a 25-yard scoring strike with 8:47 left in the third quarter, which gave the Indians a 20-7 win. Slappy caught 4 passes for 66 yards.
Indiana (9-1, 5-1 in the PSAC Western Division), ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, also scored on a 34-yard run by LeRon McCoy and a pair of field goals by Josh Telenko.
Slippery Rock (4-6, 2-3) scored on a 2-yard pass from Chad DeVore to Valdez Hails and a 2-yard run by Brandon Marcus. DeVore completed 8 of 15 passes for 107 yards. Markus rushed for 101 yards on 17 carries.
Indiana accumulated 471 yards in total offense, including 117 yards on 25 carries by Chris Morgan.
Taylor 13, Malone 9
CANTON -- Jeff Walton threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Jackson and Robby Smith kicked two field goals for Taylor.
Walton was 9 of 12 for 148 yards, including the score to Jackson in the first quarter for Taylor (1-8, 1-5 Mid-States). Jackson had four catches for 123 yards.
Smith kicked field goals of 22 and 39 yards.
Eric Smith ran for 200 yards on 31 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Malone (2-7, 0-5).
Nyrell McKnight was 8 of 23 for 84 yards and an interception for Malone. He also rushed for 55 yards on 11 carries.
Wabash 81, Hiram 0
CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN. -- Chris Morris rushed 34 times for 240 yards and four touchdowns while Aaron Lafitte added eight carries for 125 yards and three touchdowns.
Morris scored on runs of 5, 3, 6 and 18 yards while Lafitte had scores of 55, 14 and 4 yards for Wabash.
For Hiram (1-8, 0-5), Tim Anderson had 19 rushes for 77 yards.
Wabash had more first downs, 29-11, and more yards rushing, 435-93.
For Wabash it was the most points and its most lopsided victory in 91 years.
For the Little Giants (6-3, 4-2 North Coast), Lafitte set a school freshman rushing record of 907 yards for the season.
Wabash totaled 611 yards offense, 12 yards short of the school record. The 81 points were the most by the Little Giants since a 102-0 victory over Moore's Hill in 1912.
Grove City 29, USMMA 14
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sam Mowrey set a school season record with 16 touchdown passes this year for Grove City (5-5).
Mowrey completed four of 13 passes for 65 yards and TD strikes of 7 and 22 yards to Dave DiDonato. The record was 15.
Grove City ended its season with a two-game win streak.
David McNeal ran 28 times for 144 yards for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (6-3).
The Wolverines recorded two interceptions, two sacks and recovered two turnovers to keep its offense on the field.
McNeal scored on a 15-yard run in the third quarter. The Merchant Marines, however, were shut out in the final quarter as the Wolverines added another 10 points.
Tiffin 16, Geneva 13
TIFFIN -- Garrion Corbin rushed for 111 yards and a 1-yard touchdown with 2:22 remaining to give Tiffin the win.
The Dragons (5-5) took a 9-0 halftime lead on Ben Sandrock field goals of 40, 42 and 33 yards, but allowed touchdowns late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to fall behind by four points. Ben Swallow's 4-yard touchdown pass to Tony Clackler and Josh Mullen's 70-yard scoring run gave Geneva (5-4) a 13-9 lead with 8:17 to play.
Mullen ran for 117 yards and Swallow completed 14 of 24 passes for 151 yards with an interception. Swallow, a graduate of West Branch High School, was sacked four times.
Nate Washington was the only Tiffin player to catch a pass, finishing with nine receptions for 187 yards.
