WARREN Sports Hall banquet is Thursday
Six former Ohio State and Michigan players will attend.
WARREN -- The "Sixth Annual Game" banquet, sponsored by the Warren Sports Hall of Fame Club to promote the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Ohio State-Michigan Big 10 football classic, will be Thursday at the Golden Gate Restaurant on Parkman Road.
Chris Cole, the coordinator for the event, expects 400 sports fans to attend, with a social hour scheduled from 6-7 p.m.
Dick Schafrath, offensive tackle on the 1958 Ohio State national championship team, will attend. He was a six-time Pro Bowl performer for the Cleveland Browns.
Cornelius Greene, who quarterbacked Ohio State to a 31-3-1 record and led the Buckeyes to the 1974-76 Rose Bowls, also will be on hand.
Teammate Brian Baschnagel, a wing back and outstanding blocker is coming. He was part of Coach Woody Hayes' Fab 4, which included two-time All-American and Heisman trophy winner Archie Griffin.
The scores of the OSU-Michigan games from 1972-75 were a Buckeyes' 14-11 win, a 10-10 tie and Ohio State 12-10 and 21-14 victories, respectively.
Spartans
Michigan will be represented by Thom Darden, a safety on the Wolverines' 1969-71 teams. He also was a nine-year starter at safety for the Browns.
His teammate Paul Seymour, a tight end (1969-71) played pro football for the Buffalo Bills (1972-81).
Mark Messner, starting defensive tackle at Michigan (1982-84) was a two-time All-American, will be on hand .
"All six guys will alternate and give 10 minute talks about their experiences and about the rivalry between OSU and Michigan," Cole said.
In his first two seasons as Ohio State coach, Jim Tressel teams have beaten the Wolverines 26-20 and 14-9, but the Buckeyes trail in the long-time series that started 1897, 56-37-6.
Tickets for the "Sixth Annual Game" banquet will cost $35 per person and reservations can be made by calling Cole at (330) 533-9125.
Ohio State football memorabilia will be auctioned off during the event.
