Steelers still smarting by Jackson's decision
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The signature play of this Pittsburgh Steelers season might not be a Tommy Maddox interception returned for a touchdown or an opposing quarterback completing a long pass against their secondary.
It might be failing to get Arizona Cardinals safety Dexter Jackson to sign on the dotted line.
As the Steelers sought to strengthen a deficient pass defense that allowed more than 300 yards in each of their final three games last season, they thought they had a $12 million, five-year free agent deal with Jackson, the Super Bowl MVP with Tampa Bay. But the Cardinals came in with a last-minute -- the Steelers thought it was beyond the last minute -- offer of $14 million, and Jackson took it.
The signing angered the Steelers, who were forced to revamp their plans with only days to go before the NFL Draft.
Desperate to improve their secondary, they dealt three draft picks to move up 11 spots in the first round and take Southern Cal safety Troy Polamalu.
