SALEM -- A variance of city zoning regulations is being sought by Robert Dickey to construct a 13-foot-by-24-foot carport at 484 W. Fifth St.
The city zoning appeals board will consider the request at its meeting, set for 7 p.m. Monday at city hall in council chambers.
Veterans Day program
BELOIT -- West Branch High School will be presenting a free Veterans Day program at 8 a.m. Tuesday in the high school auditorium, 14277 Main St.
The event will feature patriotic music and presentations by students. Refreshments will be served.
New Castle council actson tax anticipation note
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City council agreed to contact different banks for its annual $3.5 million tax anticipation note. The money will be used to pay bills until tax dollars start coming in. Council members are expected to approve the loan in December. City council also agreed to make East Street a two-way street. The area from East Washington to North streets had been one-way going west. The change in traffic direction is part of the downtown revitalization plan. The street was recently resurfaced.
Man sentenced for thefts
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Wherry sentenced a Sharon man Thursday for several thefts last December from vehicles parked in Sharon.
Larry Steele, 28, of Prindle Street, was sentenced to four months in the Intermediate Punishment Program followed by 32 months' probation for theft from a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. According to court documents, Steele stole compact discs, checkbooks, a toolbox, cash, binoculars and other items worth less than $2,000 from four parked vehicles.
Diversity Symposiumplanned at Hoyt hall
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Mzamo Mangaliso, associate professor at the University of Massachusetts, will speak at the Westminster Diversity Symposium at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoyt Science Resources Center Phillips Lecture Hall.
A professor of business policy and strategy, Mangaliso's research interests include: strategic planning under uncertainty; globalization and its implications; ethics and corporate social responsibility. He is widely published on these subjects in various professional journals.
This is the third in a series of Diversity Symposiums at Westminster College. The events are free and open to the public.

Human-rights film event
YOUNGSTOWN -- A new local amnesty group and four other human rights-related groups will host a free film event from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall at Youngstown State University.
Goals are to raise awareness about the impact Sept. 11 has had on Arabs, Muslims and South Asians in America, and to discuss the Patriot Act. Featured will be "Brothers and Others," a documentary directed by Nicolas Rossier, followed by a forum.
Sponsors are ACTIVATE, a human rights education program; Amnesty International Group 643; the Indian National Student Association of YSU; the Mid-East Awareness Organization of YSU; and the YSU Student Diversity Council.

Investigating baby's death
YOUNGSTOWN -- The death of a 3-week-old Bessemer Street boy has been turned over to the police department's juvenile division for investigation, reports show. When officers arrived at the house at 1:48 a.m. today, the baby's mother was trying CPR but the infant appeared lifeless. The child was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
