CHICAGO, Ill. -- Youngstown State's season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to UW-Green Bay in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament.
Freshman Laura Mauer scored the Penguins' (2-17) only goal, her second of the season, while Stephanie Gross recorded a hat-trick for UW-GB (9-8-1).

Area aces
* VIENNA -- Dr. Jay Patel aced the 168-yard No. 12 hole at Squaw Creek Country Club. He used a 5-iron.
* CORTLAND -- Al Stefanik of Warren made a hole-in-one at Tamer Win golf course.
He aced the No. 2 hole, 139 yards using a 7-iron, his fourth of his career. Witnessing the shot were Chuck Altaffer, Bob Hardman and Pete Runtas.
Two area playerson Mich. St. roster
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Two of the three Youngstown area high school graduates who play for the Michigan State football team are on the travel roster for the Spartans' game at Ohio State Saturday.
David Herron Jr., a linebacker from Warren Harding, and Sean Clayton, a tight end from Poland, will be making the trip to Columbus. Both are freshmen.
Also on the team is Maurice Smith-Davis (Howland), a freshman linebacker.
Herron (6-1, 251) has played on special teams and has made four tackles.
Herron is the son of Rev. David Sr. and Brenda Herron.
Clayton is the son of Viive and Tim Clayton.
Smith-Davis is the son of Audreanna and Travis Davis. His father was a defensive tackle at Michigan State from 1986-89.
McDonald coaches
MCDONALD -- Coaches hired by the McDonald board of education were: Randy Riccitelli, boys junior high track; Ken Suich, assistant baseball; Joseph Krumpak, assistant boys track, and volunteers Dave Bregar and Mike Dunn, boys bowling coach; Steve Durbin, Travis Presco, Keith Simmons and Ryan Witoski, boys track; Kevin Stonestreet, baseball, and Rich Thompson, boys bowling.
Bowling tryouts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tryouts for the Mahoning Valley High School Bowling Conference begin the week of Nov. 10.
Students should contact their athletic directors to sign up. Students, both boys and girls in grades 9-12, may try out for the varsity and junior varsity squads. Students need not be a member of a junior league to participate in high school bowling.
Also, anyone interested in coaching should contact conference coordinator Sarah Letscher at (330) 652-7111.
Drummond named
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College junior women's soccer goalkeeper Nicole Drummond (Keystone Oaks) was named to the Academic All-District II College Division women's soccer team, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Drummond was the lone goalkeeper named to the Academic All-District II second team.
Drummond has started 20 games in goal for the Titans (15-6), allowing 16 goals for an 0.76 goals-against average. She has recorded 103 saves and five shutouts.
Westminster plays at Grove City in the PAC championship game Saturday.

Man arrested
PHOENIX -- A 19-year-old man was arrested on a homicide charge in the death of Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson, and police said they were seeking a second suspect.
Reginald Riddle also was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping, Chandler police said.
Clemens, Pettitte file as free agents
NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte filed for free agency, removing the two pitchers from the New York Yankees' roster.
Clemens has said he is retiring. By filing, the 41-year-old right-hander gives himself the option of negotiating with all 30 teams if he changes his mind.
Also filing were Florida second baseman Luis Castillo, New York Mets infielder Jay Bell and Pittsburgh infielder Pat Meares.
Clijsters wins
LOS ANGELES -- Top-ranked Kim Clijsters overcame Chanda Rubin's serve-and-volley game for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in round-robin play in the WTA Championships.
Second-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne rallied from deficits in each set and outlasted No. 5 Anastasia Myskina 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in a 2 1/2-hour match that ended just before midnight.

PHILADELPHIA -- Charlotte and Saint Louis were invited to join the Atlantic 10 Conference in an expansion that would boost the league to 14 teams.

DETROIT -- Red Wings defenseman Derian Hatcher had right knee ligament surgery and is expected to be sidelined four to six months.
Coach fired
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky State fired men's basketball coach Winston Bennett for hitting a player.
Last week, senior guard Ricky Green filed a complaint with the Franklin County attorney's office, accusing Bennett of striking him in the face during practice.
