Two-vehicle crash kills couple, injures man on Pa. Route 60
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- A New Castle couple were killed and a Bethlehem, Pa., man injured in a two-vehicle crash that closed part of Pa. Route 60 for more than five hours.
The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes about two miles south of the West Middlesex exit.
Shenango Township police and the Mercer County coroner's office hadn't released the names of those involved as of this morning, saying the victims' families hadn't been notified.
Police did say the New Castle couple were southbound on Route 60 when their car was struck by a northbound SUV driven by the Bethlehem man traveling on the southbound side of the divided highway.
The woman in the southbound car was sitting on the passenger side and was pronounced dead at the scene by J. Bradley McGonigle III, county coroner.
The driver of that car was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown where he later died.
The driver of the SUV was also flown to St. Elizabeth for treatment, police said.
Police said the road remained closed until about 10:30 p.m. A state police accident reconstruction team is aiding in the investigation.
