SHARON, PA. Speeders to be ticketed, not warned
SHARON, Pa. -- Police have been issuing speeding warnings at specific locations around the city for the past several months, but that will end Nov. 17.
On that date, officers will begin handing out tickets to speeders, said Capt. Michael Menster.
Police are using an Accutrac timing system certified by the state for use in measuring speed between two fixed points.
Sharon paints two white lines on the street a specified distance apart and uses the Accutrac unit to measure the speed a vehicle is traveling between those lines.
Menster said police have targeted 15 locations where there have been speeding complaints or a high number of accidents. School zones are also on that list, he said.
Pennsylvania's vehicle code mandates that motorists must be given a 6 mph leeway so someone traveling in a 25 mph zone would have to be traveling at least 32 mph before they could be ticketed, he said.
Someone cited for traveling 7 mph over the posted limit would face fines and costs totaling $117 and get two points on their driving record, Menster said.
Targeted areas include Sharpsville and Stambaugh avenues, the Shenango Valley Freeway, State Street and Forker Boulevard, he said.
