BOARDMAN -- Schools superintendent and longtime educator Don Dailey is stepping down.
Dailey submitted a letter of resignation to the board of education in a special meeting Nov. 5. He is scheduled to officially retire as of Aug. 1, 2004.
Dailey, a graduate of Youngstown State University, has been an educator for more than 38 years. He spent 37 of those years in the Boardman school system, starting as a teacher at West Boulevard Elementary in 1967.
Dailey went on to teach at Boardman Center Middle School, Boardman Glenwood Middle School and Market Street Elementary. He became director of instruction for Boardman schools in 1995 and superintendent of schools in 2000.
"After 38 years in the field of education, 37 of which have been in the Boardman schools, I have come to the realization that it is time for me to render my resignation for the purposes of retirement," Dailey said. "I have been blessed to have worked alongside many outstanding teachers, administrators and support staff. In good conscience I can say that I have given my best to the students, staff and the Boardman community."
Board member Atty. Mark Huberman said the district will be losing a wonderful superintendent, but the retirement is well-deserved.
"We were surprised but certainly understand that after 38 years [as an educator] he is entitled to enjoy his life a little more," he said. "He has richly earned his retirement. He has left Boardman schools more financially and academically sound than we have been in a long time."
Financially stable
Board members predict the school district should be in good financial standing for at least the next five years.
Board members have decided to appoint Frank Lazzeri as the new superintendent of schools. Lazzeri will take over as superintendent Aug. 1, 2004.
Lazzeri has been a teacher with the Boardman schools for 31 years. He has master's degrees from Kent State University and YSU. He is pursuing a doctorate at YSU.
