River Watchers from Shenango win state honor

SHARON, Pa. -- Shenango River Watchers has been named a recipient of the state's 2003 Waste Watcher Award recognizing outstanding recycling, waste reduction, reuse and composting programs in Pennsylvania.
The award is presented jointly by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Professional Recyclers of Pa., the Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association and the Keystone Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America.
Shenango River Watchers was one of 52 recycling programs recognized this year.
It's a nonprofit, volunteer watershed group formed in 2001 to restore and protect the environmental, scenic and recreational attributes of the Shenango River.
In addition to regular cleanup days along the river, the group organizes tire and other waste collection days and runs an aluminum can recycling program, which has generated $250 for its programs.
