Investigating baby's death
YOUNGSTOWN -- The death of a 3-week-old Bessemer Street boy has been turned over to the police department's juvenile division for investigation, reports show. When officers arrived at the house at 1:48 a.m. today, the baby's mother was trying CPR but the infant appeared lifeless. The child was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Teacher reports assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- A male teacher at Hillman Middle School told police he was assaulted by a parent Thursday morning, and the parent was still in the building when officers arrived. Delbert Moore, 50, of West Boston Avenue was arrested on an assault charge. Details of what led up to the reported assault were not immediately available.
Facing loitering charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Members of the vice squad arrested Edward A. Essad, 68, of Omar Street, Struthers, on Thursday afternoon on charges of loitering to engage in solicitation and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. The gun was found between the seats under a jacket, police said. Police said Essad drove slowly several times past 36-year-old Dena McCollough, who was flagging down cars on Market Street near Marion Avenue. Police approached after McCollough got into Essad's car, reports show. McCollough, of Delaware Avenue, was charged with loitering to engage in solicitation.
Robbery at sub shop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two young men robbed the Periscoop Submarine sandwich shop on Mahoning Avenue about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. They grabbed roughly $300 from the cash register after one of the men punched the clerk in the head, police said.
Fund-raising dinner
CANFIELD -- The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club will have a fund-raising all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the I.O.O.F. Hall, 111 S. Broad St.
The nonprofit group volunteers in disasters and emergencies, as spotters for the National Weather Service, for the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency, and as radio/security service for various walks and runs and other community events.
It is raising funds to buy a communication trailer mobile command unit that will be used for community service and emergency events.
Dinner tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
Emergency HEAP
YOUNGSTOWN -- Low-income Mahoning County residents can call the Youngstown Area Community Action Council (YACAC) at (866) 223-1125 to receive help getting Emergency Home Energy Assistance (HEAP). Emergency HEAP provides help to low-income households that have had utility service terminated, face the threat of disconnection, or have less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel. HEAP may also help in establishing new service. Churches or organizations needing HEAP applications may also call the YACAC office.
Free film event at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- A free film event to raise awareness about the impact Sept. 11, 2001, has had on Arabs, Muslims and South Asians in America will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall at Youngstown State University. The Patriot Act will also be discussed. The featured film will be "Brothers and Others," a documentary directed by Nicolas Rossier, followed by a forum.
Sponsors are ACTIVATE, which describes itself as a human-rights education program; Amnesty International Group 643; the Indian National Student Association of YSU; the Mid-East Awareness Organization of YSU; and the YSU Student Diversity Council.
Trumbull County 911 aid
WARREN --Federal and state emergency management agencies have agreed to pay $73,000 to Trumbull County 911, to cover some of the damages at the agency during flooding this summer, officials say.
$1.1M in investments
WARREN -- Trumbull County has collected $1.1 million so far this year on its investments, Treasurer Chris Michelakis said.
The county's 2003 budget projects interest income to be $1.5 million for the year.
