Anderson earns honors
YOUNGSTOWN -- Hillman Middle School pupil James Anderson has received a first place award in the 2003 Ohio Anti-Gang Poster Contest, Intermediate Division, for a poster he created when he attended Jackson Elementary School last year. Hillman student Megan Spare, also a former Jackson student, won second place in the same division. They were chosen from among 86 submissions.

Literacy and GED classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Community Action Council and the Youngstown city schools district offer free Adult Basic Literacy Education/GED classes from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the McCartney Learning Center, 1988 McCartney Rd. Bristolville fund-raiser
BRISTOLVILLE -- The sixth-grade class at Bristol Middle School will sponsor a Chinese Auction on Friday at the school, 1945 Greenville Road. Proceeds benefit the class trip to Washington, D.C., in May. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $3 and includes 10 raffle tickets. Additional tickets are five for $1, and food and beverages will be sold.
High school placement
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High School will administer free high school placement tests for 2004-2005 freshmen from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Nov. 22 and Dec. 6 in the school cafeteria. Results will help determine pupils' placement in courses. Pupils must bring a No. 2 pencil, a calculator and their Social Security number, and should arrive five minutes early. WKSU wins awards
KENT -- National Public Radio station WKSU-89.7 FM was recently the recipient of eight awards in the National Federation of Press Women's 2002 communication contest. Three first-place awards and one third-place award were presented in a radio broadcast. Marketing/public relations earned two second- and two third-place awards.
Ocean Sciences Bowl
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $3,850 to Youngstown State University's Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences to offer Ohio participation in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. The bowl is a competition for high school students on topics related to oceans and the Great Lakes; the grant will allow recruitment and training of Ohio school teams as well as lodging and transportation for finalists who move on to regional competition.
Developing citizens
EDINBORO, Pa. -- A free public "Developing Citizens: Character Education for Our World" conference is 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Nov. 15 in the University Center of Edinboro University. The event is sponsored by the university's Highlands Center for Faculty Initiatives. Keynote addresses are by Olympic medalist Bruce Baumgartner and Eleanore Childs, president of the Heartwood Institute in Pittsburgh. Poetry reading at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lynn Powell, author of the 1995 Brittingham Prize-winning "Old & amp; New Testaments" will read her poetry at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Kilcawley Art Gallery in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. Powell, who teaches at Oberlin College, has worked as a writer in the schools for the Tennessee Arts Commission, the New Jersey State Council for the Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council, and her poetry has appeared in several journals. Her latest book is "The Zones of Paradise."

Rosselli wins award
POLAND --Stephanie Rosselli of Poland has been selected to receive the Ohio Art Education Association's Supervision/Administration Division Award. Rosselli received a bachelor's degree in education with a minor in art in 1970 and her master's degree in gifted/talented education in 1989, both from Youngstown State University. She serves as the arts consultant and coordinator for the gifted at the Stark County Educational Service Center in Canton.
Poland teacher honored
ST. LOUIS -- Dr. Harvey Chiles, a former Poland Seminary High School music teacher, has been awarded the Emerson (Electric) Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Missouri. Chiles was Poland Seminary High School's choir director from 1980 to 1985 and founded the school's Show Choir.
