Officials ID New Castle couple killed in collision on Route 60

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Wednesday's crash on Pa. Route 60 is still under investigation, but Shenango Township Police have identified the two people killed as Donald Romanio, 69, and his wife, Norma, 73, of East Meyer Avenue, New Castle.
Police said the couple were southbound on Route 60 about 5 p.m. when a northbound SUV traveling in the southbound lanes slammed into their car.
Norma Romanio was pronounced dead at the scene by J. Bradley McGonigle, Mercer County coroner, who said she died of blunt force trauma to the chest.
Police said she was a passenger in the car driven by her husband, who was flown from the scene to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where he later died.
The Mahoning County coroner's office is expected to issue a cause of death after an autopsy.
Police said the driver of the SUV, Joseph C. Stemple, 41, of Bethlehem, Pa., was also flown to St. Elizabeth, where he was listed in stable condition Thursday.
No reason was given for why he was traveling on the wrong side of the divided highway or how far he had traveled before hitting the Romanio car.
