Niles cops issue citations
NILES -- Responding to complaints from residents about overnight parking violators, police here issued more than 120 citations on one shift.
Chief Bruce Simeone said residents have been complaining to council in recent weeks about overnight on-street parking, which is illegal between 2:30 and 5:30 a.m.
He said officers on the midnight shift visited every neighborhood between those hours this morning, writing the citations.
"They did a fine job," Simeone said. "I have no problem with them doing that every night."
Investigator struck by car
WARREN -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that sent a Trumbull County Engineer's Department inspector to the hospital.
The patrol said David E. Stephenson, 62, of Warren, was inspecting road work on North Road on Thursday morning when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Patricia Sisco, 69, of Niles.
Stephenson is in serious condition this morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Stephenson was in the northbound lane, not in the work zone on the south side of the road when he was struck, the patrol said.
Weathersfield board meets
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education will meet in special session at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the high school library to discuss potential cuts after Tuesday's defeat of a 9.5 mill, five-year emergency operating levy.
The levy was the second request for additional funding, after a 1-percent income tax issue on the May 6 ballot failed. The levy would have generated $919,360 annually for the district, which is under state fiscal watch.
Treasurer Angela Lewis said the board will discuss cutting busing and curriculum.
Also tentatively on the agenda is a discussion of expanding open enrollment to pupils statewide. The district now accepts pupils from adjacent communities.

Gas-station variance
HOWLAND -- Developers have withdrawn their variance request to build a gas station at the site of the planned Sam's Club on state Route 46.
The township zoning board of appeals was to consider the variance at a meeting Thursday, which would have allowed DeBartolo Property Group to build a gas station smaller than called for by township standards.

Niles to enforce ban
NILES -- As winter approaches, city officials are reminding residents to park their vehicles off the streets.
Safety Director Maurice Guarino said that when snow falls, the street department will need clear access for removal. Vehicles parked on the street will be ticketed if they block the way.
"If the vehicle is still there the next day, it could be towed," he said.
Guarino also said parking on city streets is illegal between 2:30 and 5:30 a.m.

The county's 2003 budget projects interest income to be $1.5 million for the year.
Rates change frequently, and officials are reluctant to say if the county is likely to meet the projection.
Last year, when rates were higher, the county collected $4 million in interest.
