Niles council shiftsmoney to departments
NILES -- Council shifted a total of $262,500 in unappropriated money to three departments Wednesday to cover a number of items, including repair work from this summer's floods.
Councilmen approved one transfer each to the sewer, municipal court and water departments.
Although some of the money was for routine expenditures, most of it -- $252,300 to the sewer department -- will be used to cover design and construction costs associated with replacing a section of sewer pipes along West Park Avenue. A portion of the money to the department will also be used for operational supplies and equipment.
Heavy rains from July aggravated a problem with the sewers. Some sections were blocked by roots, and the excess water could not flow through, causing severe flooding.
The project was one of 25 compiled by the city's floodwater task force. Each of the projects addresses repairs or replacements throughout the city of infrastructure damaged during the July rains.
Mayor Ralph A. Infante said work on West Park Avenue, which will be done by Schimley Excavating, should begin within the next two weeks.
