City settles strip-search suit with club owner
WARREN -- The city settled a lawsuit with two men who contended they were illegally strip-searched by police.
Atty. Ken Myers, who represents LaShawn Ziegler, owner of the 77 Soul club, said the city settled the federal lawsuit with Ziegler and his friend Brandon Rodgers on Thursday.
Ziegler and Rodgers filed a lawsuit in August stating they were illegally strip-searched by city police officers.
"I'm pleased it's over, and over relatively quickly," Myers said. "I applaud the city for taking steps to end this quickly."
Myers and Ziegler noted that they agreed not to reveal specific terms of the settlement.
"I just hope this prevents anyone else who gets stopped for no turn signal or driving under suspension from having to take their pants down," Ziegler said. The suit states that both men had been charged with driving under suspension; the charges were later dismissed, records state.
Law Director Greg Hicks confirmed a settlement was reached but declined to comment further.
