CORTLAND Choirs will perform at district festival
Thirteen high school choirs will perform individually, then as a group.
CORTLAND -- The 18th annual District V Chamber Choir Festival is at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Lakeview High School's auditorium.
The festival is sponsored by Ohio Music Educators Association District V, which includes Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
Tuesday's festival features 13 chamber choirs that will perform individually, then combine into a massed choir of about 300 voices.
The massed choir will be under the direction of James Gallagher, professor emeritus at Ohio State University School of Music. Gallagher taught at OSU 21 years, serving as conductor of the Men's Glee Club and the Symphonic Choir, and taught conducting, vocal pedagogy and choral repertoire.
Under his direction, the glee club won the male chorus competition in Wales.
Tuesday's show features the Wilhousky arrangement of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," a setting of "Danny Boy" by Flummerfelt, "Gloria" from Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" and Dackau's "If Music Be the Food of Love."
Participating high school choirs are Bristol (under the direction of Bonnie Chronister); Howland (Anjanette DePoy); Jackson-Milton (Janet Donaldson); Jefferson Area (Deborah McKee); Lakeview (Jane Page); Maplewood (Derrick Kittle); Mathews (Martha Young); Niles McKinley (Michael Weiher); Struthers (Rob Wagner); Warren G. Harding (Patricia Holt); Youngstown Woodrow Wilson (Elaine Carlson); Grand Valley (Joy Leirer) and Geneva (Jon Erik Schreiber)
