In 1900, President McKinley is re-elected, beating Democrat William Jennings Bryan. In 1906, Republican Charles Evans Hughes is elected governor of New York, defeating newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst. In 1928, in a first, the results of Herbert Hoover's election victory over Alfred E. Smith are flashed onto an electric sign outside the New York Times building. November 6, 1963: Anthony B. Flask, president of the Union Distributing Co. and president of council for six years, wins election as mayor, defeating incumbent Harry Savasten by 6,000 votes. Democrat George Vukovich is the new clerk of Youngstown Municipal Court, defeating George W. Cailor.
Four incumbent members of the Youngstown Board of Education easily win re-election. They are Charles B. Cushwa Jr., Hugh A. Frost, George W. Brown and Mrs. Helen D. Marshall. A 3-mill school levy is approved 25,754 to 20,669.
Ohio voters approve a $250 million bond issue that will provide money for educational and conservation facilities. Youngstown State University is expected to benefit from the issue and Mahoning County voters gave the issue strong support, 51,700 to 30,285.
November 6, 1953: Officials of the W.T. Grant Co. are attempting to determine the amount of money stolen when burglars broke into the Boardman store and burned open a small office safe.
President Eisenhower issues an order designed to give citizens a freer flow of information about their government without jeopardizing national security. Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell said an order put into effect by President Truman on Sept. 24, 1951, could be used by government officials to cover up dereliction of duty and mistakes.
